Looking to do some Gill fishing and was curious if 10lb. Braid Would be Overkill for a #6 Hook. Also is Snelling the Hook Bettering my Chances on an Up-Turned Eye. TY.

As for catching sunfish with 10 pound test line I have seen it done many times. I personally use 6 pound test line. Bass anglers while fishing for bass using heavier test line have caught their share of sunfish. As for Snelling your hook I would not think it would matter either way on catching sunfish. I have fished with anglers who use the Snelling method and have caught their fare share of nice sunnies.

Ten pound braid has the same diameter as 2 pound mono. It will work fine when tied directly to a #6 or #4 Aberdeen hook. Using a snelled hook is not necessary and introduces extra knots which weaken the line. Ten pound braid is fine where the line gets snagged regularly, or where bigger fish often tear up your tackle. It casts well. It is also the most aggravating line in the world when it gets tangled as the fine line forms knots which are almost impossible to get out.

Is there a reason you want to use braid for sunnies? Actually, we are considering going to braid, because we are getting bitten off by gar when targeting sunfish. Thinking light braid might improve our chances of landing a few longnose.

The only turned hook eyes I see are either for split shot/drop shot hooks or baitholder hooks. Most baitholders are not quite suitable for most sunfish situations, although they will do in a pinch and there are plenty folk out there who only fish for sunfish with baitholder hooks. So, to each their own. If you do use a medium gauge turned hook like a baitholder, I do tend to use a snell knot because it tends to be a more fluid, strong and natural connection to that type of hook. When I'm using one to fish for bullheads or other catfish, I snell.
