Walmart online has abu revo stx shs right now for 135 new. That's by far the best bang for a new reel.

Yeah I have looked at Academy reels, but I notice that they collapse under pressure. Like when you get a good fish on, the reel's handle will turn but the spool will stay still. That is called "Drag" You tighten or loosen the star shaped thing under the reel handle to adjust this pressure. You can screw it all the way down and prevent this from happening but if you hook a really big fish and it makes a hard run, it will probably break your 15# line. Loosening this off a bit allows the spool to slip so the fish can pull a few feet of line so hopefully it doesn't break. Typically the heavier the pound test line you use, the tighter you can set the drag, to a point. Could also be line slipping on the spool. Maybe braid with no backing or tape. Like others have mentioned in this thread, the new Shimano Caenan is great for $99.99

I would stay away from graphite/plastic framed reels

I would stay away from graphite/plastic framed reels With the advances in composites and carbon based plastics, there isn't really a worry anymore. I own several plastic framed reels that I really like.

I've never had the problem you mentioned with the Academy H20 reels. Mine has treated me great and caught a lot of good fish for me. And for the cost? Look for the H20 Camouflage combo with a MH rod. It's still used by me every time I go out as a spinnerbait rod.

Diawa tatulas are a good reel for a retail of $150 .. U can find them online for about $110 shipped.. I used black max, silver max , and pro max .. All were decent reels but the quality is not there .. They all work great for a couple of years then give out .. Stripping gears , not engaging after the handle is turned and also losing casting distance .. If u buy a $50 reel u get what u pay for .. After having tatulas for a few years I am hooked .. $20 to get them serviced every other year also pays off I agree with this. I've gotten all my Tatula's for right around $100. I now own 6 of them? Im losing count lol. One is a Tatula HD200 I got for 120 online. Really good bang for your buck at this price point too. And Natebzy I can do your Tat's for $15 a reel so there's another $5 savings!

Quantum 1310mg, bought 2 of them new in 1989, still have them, they work great and never had them in the shop. Kept them cleaned and oiled and can still almost throw the line off of them. Can throw rattle traps, spinner baits and DD22's with ease. love'em. That was the best reel Quantum ever made. I am not sure any of their new ones are as good as those. These older model 1310mg reels were made in Japan. Not sure about the new ones. Old stuff is sometimes better including Ken Soo Choo ( lol ) and myself. Most all of the new Quantums are made in China and it shows. Not a fan..

Ain't payin' $200-300 for some of these new reels when my old ones still work great.

I currently have 27 rods and about 30 reels in my boat. I have everything from $300 Daiwa reels to $59 H20 from Academy. I have 2 lesser Diawa's, several Quantum's (about 5 versions) and 4 BPS Extreme,6- BPS Pro Qualifier/ Johnny Morris reels and 2 Lew's.
The best casting and longest lasting (over 10 yrs. old) is a BPS Extreme (Green). The smoothest casting is the Lew's. I do have a problem with the line capacity on the Lew's reel. I feel it is in on the short side when throwing 17 to 20lb Fluoro. The longest lasting have been the Quantum reels.
With one exception (the $300 Diawa) almost everyone of my reels cost between $80 to $140 and they have all performed well. I had to send one Quantum back on warranty and that is it. But I do clean and lube my reels every winter and add a dab of oil of the cranking reels a couple of times during the year. I would say any reel over $70 up to $130 are equivalent. The heart of a reel is in the line spool and capacity, the number of bearings and the gears. The more you pay the better quality you get.
John K Fontenot Diapers and Politicians need to be changed often; and for the same reason.

The heart of a reel is in the line spool and capacity, the number of bearings and the gears. The more you pay the better quality you get. Quality of bearings, not number of bearings. Funny how a $40 reel can have 9+ bearings while a $500 reel can sometimes have 4 or 5 bearings.
