I read a book one time that claimed some bass live in shallow water all the time year round, some suspended, some deep all the time year round...The book was based on them attaching tracking devices on them and monitoring their activities...What do you guys think? Opinions?

Purely my opinion but I think there are fish everywhere. The key is to be around a concentrated group that wants to eat.

Individual lakes differ with depth, structure, available forage and cover. In the cold of winter or the dog days of summer you may be able to catch them in a foot of water out to 40' and sometimes deeper. Thermoclines have to be considered and catching bass deep may be frustrating for some anglers.

There are fish in every range all year. BUT, the majority of fish are doing one thing at any certain time other than around the spawn.

The book was John Hope's "Track'n Trophies." I think this behavior certainly exists in a lot of southern reservoirs. I spoke with John about it one time and he told me that every fish he tracked over nearly a 15 year period exhibited this exact behavior. John said the fish never left their preferred layer, with the lone exception of deep layer fish heading shallow for the spawn. I'm not sure the behavior exists in all bodies of water, particularly in less fertile lakes in the north, but I do believe it is very common behavior in Texas water.
