I am going to be heading to Lake Austin for the weekend of the 16th with family and plan to spend a good portion of time fishing. From what I've read the fishing is decent but the boat traffic is crazy. I've never been there before so any tips would be much appreciated. Also, is the boat traffic really too bad to fish? Is getting into those creeks a viable plan to dodge the wakes?

Thanks,
Wes

Not very many creeks to sneak away from the boat traffic. And yest it does get bad. You not only get the initial wake bet also the return wake. Austin is narrow. So if you plan to fish it you better get your attitude in check by being able to fish with the boats going by you within 10 yards, yes I said 10 yards, if not closer at times. If you want to fish it, I would be on the water at daylight and be prepared to get off around 10 AM, that will give you at least 4 hours of decent fishing.

However, if the constant of wake boats and bobbing up and down like a cork, while taking water of the bow or stern of the boat even remotely gets under your skin, then do not go. You have to have you mind set straight when you fish Austin during the summer. Good Luck.

I don't fish Austin in the daylight hours during summer.

And if you don't mind me asking, where did you hear that the fishing was decent? It's been pretty much dead since the grass got eaten a few years ago.

Hell, even the infamous Wednesday nighters have postponed the tourneys until fall for lack of fish and lack of interest.

Go early.

Fish Bull Creek. This will get you away from the boat traffic. Go all the way up and work your way out. There are always pockets that hold fish. Focus on the North / East side of the creek. Good structure and a few deep holes. Jig N craw. Green pumpkin

Thank you for the tips. I might be able to squeeze one day out on Travis but for the most part we will be on Austin.

Getting in some early/late fishing wouldn't be too bad. I am familiar with the tight river system wake and return wake from ski boats on Lake Dunlap, so I will probably be dodging that mid day stuff.

Also, Hookem, you are definitely right. Going back and looking closer at the videos they were all from 2014 and prior. Sorry to hear about the quality of this fishery, it looked nice at one point.

Lake Austin is tough with no boat traffic. It's basically a river with a lot of wake board boats. I would not recommend it on the weekends unless you wanted to get frustrated. Lady bird is trolling motor only but but fishing is really good. Travis gets pretty crowded but their are enough places to get away from the traffic.
