I was skipping a jig under docks this weekend at LBJ. I got what seemed to be a very aggressive bite in the bottom third of the water column in about 12-15 foot of water, I go to set the hook and whiff. I reel up my jig to make another cast and notices my trailer is sticking straight up, I figured the trailer got pulled off the hook keeper as it sometimes does during a whiff. I try to push it back down but it's still sitting flush on the jig, confused I take off my Rage Craw to notice that my hook is completely bent in. I was throwing a 1/2oz Strike King Structure Jig, which is a fairly heavy wire hook, I'm just totally confused as to how this happened and what could have done this. Has anyone ever seen this before? At this point I have no clue what it could have been or how this could have happened. Any wisdom or thought's would be appreciated.

wow, i have never seen that. I assume it was straight when you tied it on or you would have noticed when you put the trailer on.

You probably had nailed a few docks while skipping and hadn't noticed that it was bent.

This has happened several times over the years. You banged the hook just right causing it to bend, then you got a bite pulling the trailer out of place.

The weird thing is that I readjusted the trailer the cast or two casts before the bite, and I would think that in my infinite awareness on the water that I would have noticed the bent hook when I readjusted the trailer. The cast or two after adjusting the trailer were pitches to the outside of pilings; which didn't really hit anything but the bottom. So the only thing I can deduce is that it got bent on the bite. Also, the bite/hookset never pulled the trailer out of place, it just looked out of place because of the hook being bent.

I'm not denying I don't whack my fair share of docks throughout the day though, so that's definitely a possibility, I just think I would have noticed it being that way while I readjusted the trailer and made those two pitches. I didn't even think about that so thanks.

Here is another theory. I know a guy that has a old truck cab attached to his dock. There is one mean big old Bass that lives there. Her jaws are like a vice; but it more likely when she saw the jig come in she rolled the window up on it, mashing the hook.

I've had this happen to me too. I boiled it down to hitting the hook just right and a weak spot in the hook. You could've also hit the dock a few times too many and didn't notice your hook already starting to bend. I've done that with light wire hook swim jigs.

I'd say that there is no way that you caused that hook to bend by hitting a dock. It's too stout of a hook. I'm not sure what happened, but I don't think that it bent on the cast. I kinda like the turtle answer.

But that is a good point, a 2x Owner Cutting Point hook is a strong @$$ hook.
