It looks like the EPA is going ahead with RFS increase in 2017! The National Marine Manufactures Association has tried to stop it but with no results so far. This will put all outboards at risk with the E15 fuel. Both Mercury and Evinrude are fighting the ruling. Looks like we can't stop this so has anybody got any ideas on how to modify outboards to run E15?

Be sure to carry a paddle if you fill that ranger up with E15.

Are you saying it will replace E10 ? There are still places to buy ethanol free gas. A little more expensive but I wouldn't want to chance E15 in my SHO. I think TX Rig has a point.

I think it will be optional for stations.

Found this on way to Table Rock Lake in Muskogee, OK! Guess where I filled up boat on the way home? They call it E087... hadn't seen a big name station with Ethanol-free gas in a loooong time. Wrote QT to encourage more of the same in DFW area.

Also, www.pure-gas.org has a list of stations broken down by state which supply Ethanol-free fuel...

I dont think the epa allows ethanol free sale in the dfw area because we have too many cars or poor air quality or something - you have to go some # of miles out, not sure how many, but approximately lake fork. If they could sell it here they would i am sure

The plan is to replace E10 with E 15 over time. And your SHO is not made to run on E15 it will void warranty. To my knowledge no outboard is certified to run E15.

Think of it this way for every 10 gallons of E10 refined gas one gallon is ethanol, for E15 1 1/2 gallons. How many Texas jobs is that equal to? Plus Ethanol cant exist without subsidy's paid by taxpayers.

Just because the RFS is set in place for 2017 (and will be through at least 2022) does not mean you will be forced to use E15. It might show up in more places, but it's more likely you will see fewer ethanol-free pumps. E10 will become more and more prevalent.

E15 has a lot of problems beyond marine and small engines. Manufacturers warranties for autos and unwillingness of gasoline retailers to sell it are arguably bigger issues, at least as far as Washington is concerned.

For the 2016 RFS standard, EPA set the ethanol mandate at just over 10% of total US gasoline demand. This is the first time they have breached that number. They did the same thing in the 2017 proposal. This is a big deal because up until this year the standard had been below 10% of gasoline demand, meaning refiners could get away with not blending E15 and E85 and in some cases could make E-0 if they could sell to marketers in areas without certain air quality restrictions. With EPA forcing just over 10% of the gasoline pool to be made of ethanol, it leaves fewer options for refiners than before. E10 will become nearly universal. The E-0 stuff will be in shorter supply. No one outside of Iowa is really using E-85. If there is ethanol left over after these adjustments, refiners will export it to Brazil because all they need to do to meet EPA requirements is blend the stuff, not sell it domestically.

Another issue is even if the RFS is repealed or otherwise reformed, there will still be a lot of ethanol in the system. Refiners use it as an octane booster and it helps meet emissions standards in urban areas with air quality (ozone) limits. Without the RFS, E15 and E85 would go away pretty quickly and you would start to see more E-0 pumps outside of major cities. But ethanol one way or another is pretty much here to stay.

Had no idea 10 gal. contained 1 gal. ethanol. Don't even like putting it in my truck. I use premium in my SHO but guessing it has the same percentage of ethanol. What octane is ethanol free gas, anybody know ?

Meh, I will just go buy me a few drums of good fuel and keep it in my shop if that is what I have to do.
