How much salt water can a gator gar live in? I caught these over the weekend in a canal that goes into the intercostal water way which we all know leads to the bay to the gulf so how salty is the water I wonder. I did notice that there are no oysters on the poles where I caught these and as I got closer to the gulf there were a lot so I know the water is fresher where I was. My son put a rod out and went in for a sandwich came back to a spooled reel. That night I heard gar gasping or whatever you call it, I could hear them gulping so I rigged up and caught four. None were reel big but still fun and very unexpected as I didn't even know they were there.

They can live in full saltwater. That's very interesting. I wonder if they prefer the more fresh water. I got on the kayak and paddled around the canals and the fish I seen were all at the canals farther from the ocean. Thanks Dawson.

They can live great in the ocean, the rougher water is the bigger deterrent for them in the open water rather than the salt.

those are nice fish congrats Thanks man. For your peace of mind they were caught with bronze trebles and released within about three minutes of getting on the dock. I see no reason to kill them but don't look down on those who take their legal limit either.
