Used an old old lure this morning.
So old the hook was old and discolored, maybe even rusty.
Hooked a big one that makes you grunt.
Big pull, bent rod,but never saw him.
That old hook snapped right into.Got the lure back, just no hook or fish.
I guess others have done that.

Screw in a new set of hooks and get back on the water.

Ive got a theory that old lures can catch those big fish because everyone is throwing new store bought lures and the old lures present something this generation of fish hasn't seen! put some new split rings and trebles matched to the bait and keep throwing it.

Put a larger red treble on the front and a bronze on the back.

This is a common belief & I just do not agree with it. There have been studies (probably funded by the US Government for $12-20 million that found gold fish have an attention span of about 5 seconds.) Also, it has never happened to me, but you hear of a fisherman catching the same fish on consecutive casts. Fish are not very intelligent and I have found that it is very difficult to out smart them.

This is called a Learned Response. Any animal can be trained to avoid certain objects that have stung them over and over again no matter how small the brain. Every species of fish is different because of their feeding habits from minnows to sharks. Throwing different and old school baits certainly cannot hurt and in many cases will help you catch more fish.

The key here is fish areas that not as many fisherman have fished as possible. Fish as far away from the field of fisherman as you can get. Learn to fish deeper water where these responses to lures are not as great.

You see this Learned Response in small bodies of water take president like in a pond. If you fish a pond everyday for a week with a H&H spinner/ Sassy Shad you will see your catch ratio go down dramatically. Move this theory to larger bodies of water where hundreds of boats are fishing down the shore line and you will realize that the fish have learned to avoid these crank baits and plastics that they come in contact with daily.
