I often target sunfish in the summer, and lccasionally I will catch a crappie while slowly reeling my beetle spin over hydrilla. I want to start swimming a curly tail grub along grass lines to see if I can catch more crappie. What length swimming tail grub should I use? Will appreciate your help.

I would definitely stick to the 1-2 inch grubs. A roadrunner with a normal minnow body would also probably get bit pretty good.

1/8 and 1/16 ounce rooster tails also work amazing and you will catch both plus plenty of bass.

fishin'aholic2 and Eric, thanks for the replies. Will find some 1-2 inch size grubs, and also try rooster tails. Appreciate the fast replies.

The curly tails that are 2 1/2" will work on a jig head or roar runner. If it looks a little too long, pinch off some of the body, then thread the curly tail on.

You can go as small as 1" with mister twister, and they have a huge variety of colors! The price is very decent also.

3" should be perfect for crappie. I use the 3" ones they sell in bulk at barlows.

Thanks for the reply McKinney CC. I caught a bunch of crappies on a 3-inch curl tail grub one spring, back in a cove, while fishing it for Guadalupe bass. I just didn't/don't know if a smaller and shorter grub would get more bites in the summer months when they are not as aggressive???

Summer = high metabolism from heat so they eat, and eat, and eat. Downsizing will probably get more bites from small and medium fish but harder to get the big ones. Use both. Once you find some throw the larger bait and when it slows switch to a smaller one... then switch colors...etc

You can easily catch an 8" crappie on a 3" curly tail. If I'm gonna use a curly tail I'll use 3" to keep all the bluegill and baby crappie off.
