Took my son out yesterday morning (4th) and we caught a slew of sunfish on 1/2 sized nightcrawlers. I had a little time to fish with the fly rod and caught a unique fish (to me) that I don't remember ever catching (or have forgotten). Based on my research, I think it is a coppernose bluegill, but I would really like to hear back from the sunfish experts on the forum. What type of fish is this in your opinion? confused

Coppernose.

Is it just me or does it help seeing the dark scales on the forehead to ID?

Yup, full blood Coppernose!

Fitz: Natives have the black scales on the forehead a lot of the time too. The Coppernose can have them further down the body sometimes. The Natives can also have the spots further down but it is usually more controlled. But if a Native and a Coppernose cross, the spots can end up everywhere! It is one of my favorite variants. I have countless pictures of them but I won't spam this man's post, here are a few examples.

Picture 1 is a Native Bluegill and the other three are Native Bluegill and Coppernose Bluegill mix.

Thanks Banker and others for providing input! Besides other features, what finally tipped me was the copper portion right above the eyes. Coppernose have to be stocked? or are they native to this area?

I need about 20 of those fried up with the tails still on. I'm hungry for some after seeing these pics.

Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

Coppernose are Native to Florida but we're introduced into many other states including Texas many many years ago. They have since established themselves here and can be caught in most lakes. TPWD hasn't stocked them publicly in many years because they are so abundant here now but people purchase them from fish farms all the time to stock into private waters.

Actually, I have seen videos of you fishing and you're always catching fish, so you don't need any help!
