I don't post on here very often, but I need help. These summer bass have got me stumped. Over the past several years, throwing into a school of feeding bass was almost too easy. It seemed that it didn't matter what you threw, you were gonna get bit. Over the past few weeks, that hasn't been the case at all. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've tried traps, cranks, spinners, swim baits and I'm getting skunked.

If youre talking about schoolers at Athens, they have been pretty tough to catch. On friday they schooled for over an hour within 20ft from the boat. Only caught 12 fish out of them. Only solo fish would bite topwaters. I threw everything frop poppers, spooks, cranks, everything. Finally decided to tie on a "bluegill flash" colored fluke and they tore it up. Throw it in the middle of them, twitch 2-3 times and let it die and BAM. Try this next time

Flukes rule

Or Caffeine Shad
Or small spoons

Athens schoolers have been real finicky this summer.
I found a 3 inch Rapala shad colored jerk bait to be the ticket.

I hade the same problem last year and found a senko thrown in the middle of the school and dead sticked worked for me. Also a 1oz jigging spoon thrown at the school and let sink about 5 foot a jerked a time or two would catch some bigger fish. Hope this helps.

Don't overlook the drop-shot for the schoolers...

Sometimes schooling bass get so keyed in on the shad that unless your bait is exactly the same size they will ignore it. I've had them on Fork schooling like crazy and not be able to catch them. This typically occurs this time of year when the shad are pretty small. Try downsizing your baits.

I agree. Even schooling sandies can be this way. Tie a crappie jig above your main lure and it can make a huge difference.

Yamamoto D Shad

One thing that you can try that's loud and subtle at the same time is a soft jerkbait in a bright color. Try the Yamamoto D Shad in the Lime Fever color. A lot of times it's hard for bass to single out a single shad or baitfish. So throwing this bait in a bright color will allow them to single it out and smoke it. I like this better than the Zoom Fluke because it has more salt and it sinks faster. It'll get down below the school a little bit faster and get in front of those bigger fish.

Another thing you can try is to color some of your spinnerbait skirt red. That works really well for me as well.
