Get something that will stay on the hook. Cut bait or preferably some bream. Grab a small hook and some earthworms and catch some bait.

I have noticed that baiting out right about dark helps with the bait thieves .

I did pretty well with cubes of cheap cheddar cheese today. What kind of hooks are you using?

Cheese is sort of an old standby for me. Let it sit in the sun until it gets soft and oily. Makes it easier to get on the hook without cracking. Stays on well and bream don't seem to mess with it.

Live perch will slow the bait stealers down

From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."

Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

Small live sunfish and small bullheads will help keep the turtles off and will catch some flatheads if there are any there. You'll probably always have turtles going at your trotlines and throwlines either way. Throw some range cubes out when you set it and it should attract a higher volume of cats so you at least have more cats than turtles.
