cool. i remember seeing several little cats in like 1/2" of water where a creek trickled in the lake as a kid. I grabbed a handful of baby cats and immediately realized I made a huge mistake.
Were there several of them?

Not sure what type they are.
there were hundreds of them right at the edge of the banks thought they were tadpoles until I saw the spines

Yep made the same mistake, accidently stepped into them barefoot, foot swelled up like a toad.
