I am using an old Penn 350 level line baitcaster. I want to get out past the second sand bar. I can wade out a little bit and cast. How long should it be? Are there any really junky brands to stay away from?

Good luck getn some advice.? All I can say is go fishin! My longest rod 7'5. I'm headed to port a in 2 days fishing the surf and piers. Fish the guts and you will get bit! You want to get out further hit the piers. I catch with my gear so no need for surf rod.. I only go every other year.. Jmo

Depends on what you want to spend. Penn battalion is cheap and a great rod, penn carnage is slightly better. There's also st croix mojo surf rod or avid...
I use saragosa reel on carnage and can easily cast 140+ yards using a lure slightly over 1oz
