I got into a discussion recently with someone about catching sand bass. After 35-years of fishing for them there isn't a whole lot left to learn on how to catch them. But I politely listened as they gave me the "keys" to catching sand bass. I mentioned right now you could throw just about anything down there and catch them. I've personally caught over (300) in the past week. So I thought to myself I'm going to put my theory about using anything to a test. Below you will see the secret key to catching sand bass. I've "unlocked" the secret for everyone to use! Yes that is exactly what it looks like. Just use common sense and go fishing. That's what's key! I can't lie. I was a little proud of the catch. I was on Roy Bomberger's boat tonight and he was my witness and photographer. Happy Fishing.

LOL! It was an old key she gave to me to use. Neighbor Mark and I made it into a Chartreuse lure in about two minutes.

A smaller 3" size church key has also worked very well in the past, drill 2 holes and split rings and your set.

My brother caught some last year on a lure he made out of paper clips twisted around each other. If you can find them 90% they'll eat just about anything

I once caught a mess @ Ray Hubbard off the Old 66 roadway on an Aluminum can pull tab with a treble hook in one end and a 1/16 oz sinker at the other back in the late 70`s

OMG some funny comments! I knew a guide on Hubbard years ago. Johnny Miller I think his name was. He kept his boat by me at Harbor Bay. Any way he would do this. He used a regular single eagle claw hook. He cut a piece of plastic straw and would place the straw above the hook. He then slipped on a few free weights above it. We would go out and just jig the thing and the sand bass killed it! Plus you only had one hook to remove. The weights made noise kind of like a rattle trap. I saw the comment above and actually said on Facebook a beer can tab may be next. There's no shortage of those on Hubbard! I don't drink but I know some "suppliers!" Life is good and so is the fishing. That's key right Todd!

Sand bass are great fun for the kids. Lil buggers get old when trying to crappie fish at PK. One thing for sure, you never get a chance to get bored, as I'm always catching a few sandies even if nothing else is biting.

Todd you can be my "key" supplier! I made two of them. One is larger one is smaller. Will try the small one next. Have family coming this weekend. May let the kids try them out.

Not bad Chris. Lol. Gotta brag about my two hubbard buddies, Frank and Bovee. They are two low-key guys who like to mon-key around in the lure lab (aka car garage) after work hours and they designed some really cool lures that catch fish! Guess the key to their success is not to get locked up with one lure??? Lol

Two very gifted anglers in my book. cheers

I remember the same thing years ago using a kitchen spoon.

"..The pleasantist angling is to see the fish
Cut with her golden oars the silver stream,
And greedily devour the treacherous bait.

Todd you are a good friend and too kind. My first fish ever I was five years old. My Dad set me up on a minnow and bobber on a cane pole. I sound like Huck Finn! It was a Doctor friend's stock pond. They went up to have a beer. They said bobber goes under lift the pole up. I'm sitting there and the bobber goes under and the pole goes flying! I dove in and grabbed it and ran backwards. First fish ever was a six pound black bass. I was hooked. Fishing is tranquility to me. Working in I.T. there is a ton of stress. Out there it melts away. We all experiment. Look at how many Thumpers you've birthed! I love to dabble. That's it.

It's better to keep a revolutionary bait like that one low key...posting these things on public forums enables too many anglers to key in on your technique.

Coach- Grab a Barbie Doll head for your daughter and weave some treble hooks into her hair. Wait never mind! She may have nightmares for years after that....

I am dying here laughing! I work a lot and haven't posted for awhile. I know now what I've been missing. I'm still chuckling about the one where you may have to use a Master Lock late summer! Man I needed some laughs. This has been too much fun.

My cousins and I caught them before using a piece of plastic from a plastic grocery bag, hook, and sinker. Guess you can say we had bags of fun that day.

Awesome thread...I guess it's safe to say your catching the fish at the key hole!!

The driving force and secret desire of every bass fisherman, is to one day be a crappie fisherman............Could it be that the good Lord just smilies and looks the other way when a fisherman tells a lie?
