A few things I realized when fishing all through the 90's on lakes like Fork, Bob Sandlin and Cedar Creek is that I had better results when looking back on the logs I used to keep on moonless dark nights compared to fishing the full moon and on lakes with lots of docks like Cedar Creek I caught more fish on unlighted docks than on docks with lights. Those go against what I always thought but what my record keeping showed.

I've always had better luck fishing around the new moon than the full moon.......

I have went night fishing a couple times and wore Gen III night vision googles. It is basically like fishing during the day. Very expensive but very cool. I can also operate the boat basically the same as i would during the day.

If you cannot afford night vision goggles I would suggest using as little light as possible.

None if you can get away with it.

Your eyes get adjusted to low light, the cones and rods and what not do something to help you see at night. Once you expose your eyes to a bright light it takes a good 30 mins to get your eyes adjusted again.

A Black Jitterbug, change out the hooks. Make sure your line is good and the knot is tied right. As said, they do not nibble. A Black Buzzbait will get your arm broke.

1. Fish the area several times during the day so you know your way around it before you attempt it at night.
2. Keep your stern light on to stay legal.
3. Glue a red lens over your flashlight lens to retain your night vision.
4. Use dark or black lures: black blades and skirts on your spinnerbaits, black chatterbaits, black T-rigged worms.
5. Be careful and stay as safe as you can. Keep an eye out for drunks and other dangerous people on the water and be ready to stay away from them. Make sure someone knows where you are and when to expect to hear from you.
6. Use mosquito repellent. No one wants Zika, etc.
7. Normally, slow and steady retrieves are more productive than jerky, erratic retrieves.

Good luck to you!

I can tell from this that phototex has night fished quite a few times. Great guidelines to follow. Slow down and think what you are doing. Try to keep noise to minimum to. You should be able to bump up your line size also. This along with some of the other advice given is some really good information.
