I'm going on my first striper fishing trip for father's day weekend.A friend has been catching them on live perch and a has instructed me on where to go what to do. The problem is, do to having to travel, and my work schedule, I won't have any live bait for the first morning...could someone tell me what to do/use to catch them on artificial baits...the presentation will be mainly vertical, but you can cast out as well...water depth it 30'to 50'. I'll have my wife and Two son's with me and this will be quiet a bit different than our normal crappie and bass trips. Thanks.

I would use slabs and buck tail jigs for that application. I would use a heavy slab like 2 oz. Vertically jigged. A soft shad style bait with a 1 oz head would also be in my boat. This could be used to cast out and count down to where the fish are being marked and retrieve back. Also would be use full if the fish were to school. Best bet on artificial will be at first light as the fish will probably be more active.

Don't forget magnum flutter spoons, like the 4"-6" ones we use for bass fishing out on structure these days. Catching perch would be easy enough, regardless of the amount of time. All you need is light action tackle, cork, split shot, small hook and some whole kernel corn and fish near the docks. Won't take long at all.

Don't get too discouraged if those stripers won't eat your artificial baits too well, it happens sometimes and high sky, light wind days seem to make it worse. I fished with a guide many years ago at Lake Whitney who said he was doing well trolling mid-summer. We tried for hours, marked all kinds of fish in the flooded tree tops along the river channel but not 1 single bite. By 10 am (started at daylight) we had only managed to catch a handful of sandbass that were schooling early but no stripers. He went back to the marina, whipped out some spinning tackle and the 3 of us went to catching perch. Went right back to where we had marked the fish in the tree tops and dropped our baits and began getting bit immediately. Ended up with limits up to 8 lbs, nothing smaller than 6 lbs.

I lived on Texoma for 2 yrs and one of the best things I found was to throw a rattle-trap. You can cover alot of
water with a trap and I caught quite a few over 30". Got quite a few on various crankbaits as well.

In my opinion the rattle trap is good for certain occasions. It is deadly when you find fish shallow. If they are holding deep, many times you can throw it til your arm falls off and never get hit because you are too shallow in the water column. Electronics are the gamechanger. 2-d, downscan, sidescan especailly are your friends. Slab spoons, sassy shads, flukes, different types of crank baits, flutter spoons and the lot all have their place. I'm no pro but knowing patterns is huge. Flukes deadsticked are killer in the winter and not as effective in the summer. Rattle traps can be used effectively in the winter but the person deadsticking has a high possibility of outfishing them. But then again thats just my opinion.

In my humble opinion, I would troll an umbrella rig. I love a slab bite as much as anyone, but if you don't have time for catching shad/perch or scout, umbrella rigs are the best to me. You can cover so much more ground and actually try to find where fish are holding. Make sure to bring some egg weights and swivels so you can run them at different depths.

That said, I do like the idea, with your kids, of getting them started off catching some perch at the dock. While it will take longer, I think it would get them into it pretty quickly.

Best of luck!

I like using artificials about 40% of the time in warmer months, just try to mark what looks like active fish. I like to throw a 5" sassy on a 3/4 oz head. I will let it sink several feet, sometimes to the bottom and then reel through them. I haven't caught anything over 10lbs on artificial yet but good numbers. This is usually in 25' or less, early. This is excluding dam fishing.

Big hammer swimbaits from 3" to 7". Bay smelt is my go to color but I also like shad, sexy smelt, Sara's shad and great white depending on water clarity

Also, I use the big hammer heads of all sizes and redfish magic jigheads with them as well

As summer heats up, Striper will chase big baits. Not heavy, but big profile slabs! The Apocalyto will clobber HotSummer Hybrid Striper! Try 4.5" SlimShadeE Swimbaits too! We carry some very cool flutter spoons too! Don't fear the 8" ElGrande! Think Big & Fast!
