Sour Grain Chum Life?

Any idea how long sour grain will be effective as chum? Example would be 3 gallon bucket with some small holes or slits in the side, weighted with a brick. How long would you say it would keep putting out enough scent/particles to do some good?
OR.....is dropping something plastic with a brick a bad practice? If so, are there any biodegradable options?
If you can either quickly or quietly switch out shells, you can bring home almost anything.

I usually change mine every 7 to 10 days with fresh if it is already soured. If it sours in the water we are fishing, I change that out every 10 to 14 days.
