Thinking of heading to Broken Bow next week. I have fished there a couple times, exclusively at Evening Hole. Was thinking of trying some new areas, such as upstream from the former bridge at Cold Hole, and also Zone 2. Not sure where to access Zone 2 - is there a trail that begins at the low water dam in the state park and then heads downstream? Should I wear the waders to fish Zone 2 or can it be fished from the bank? Thanks for the help.

Zone 2 is totally dependent on generation from the turbines. unfishable if it is generating. There is a trail from old park dam. you have to wade to fish Z2. Upstream from former bridge at cold hole is a whole new river after the floods. It is a tough hike/climb. EH is a disaster.....but easy to wade/walk. Good luck.

Thanks Golfer Jeff. Why do you say that Evening Hole is a disaster? I fished there in early March (not long after the park reopened) one morning and caught a few decent trout. It did look different from the last time I was there a couple years ago, and there were not as many trout in the water but I assumed that was just due to the timing of when the stocking takes place.

EH has been very tough because they removed structure when they re-did the bridge. There are a few fish in there, but it is tough. Just nothing like it used to be

To access Zone 2: Head south through the park, past all the cabins, past the big RV camping section, keeping to the right, mostly. You finally get to the end of the road right at the small dam. A nice trail heading straight south starts at the steel gate. You can wade-fish there, another shoal area about a quarter mile downstream, and the rock island area about 3/4 of a mile downstream. Otherwise, mostly, the shore is too thick with bushes and trees for fly-casting from. The water in all the in-between areas is too deep to wade as well.

Yeah, the Evening Hole is kind of featureless now compared to before. The Bluffs is just a big long very deep hole. The rock island formed by the flood is a long, straight fast run on each side. Spillway Creek with all the jagged bedrock is so hard to access safely I've given up on it. Beaver's Bend is, for the time being, kind of wrecked as a fly-fishing destination compared to what it was before Memorial Day weekend last year. Of course it was really really nice then.

There's still fish though! I mean, it's ok, just not what it was before.

I have been a couple times in the last two months. I would not recommend going at all. You will have more fun catching Blue Gills in your local ponds, in your neighborhood. I caught two fish over 20 inches a few weeks back and millions of 6-10 inch trout. NOT FUN IN MY BOOK. Makes it hard to charge people 200-300$ for fish sticks.

So when I do go up there, we are targeting the Crappie and Walleye. Walleye are my preferred targets.

Yessir, crappie and walleye are the preferred targets. These walleye we are catching eat those little trout.

I do love me some walleye, but upon review I have decided to pack my spinning gear and hit the surf early next week - wind forecast looks very good for Galveston which is the critical factor for catching specs in the waves. Will try the LMF later this summer and most definitely in the fall and winter.

San Luis Pass north east corner of the bridge, there are some lights behind the building sitting next to the channel. Has picnic tables right next to the lights shinning in the water on the west side of the small bridge that connects to the RV park. If you make it to the spot, and your looking at the water, to your left 30 yards is a ramp, for a land mark.. Tiny flukes on 8 lb line in the lights at night with a moving tide. 1/32 or 1/16 th oz jig head. cast and twitch back. You should be able to see them popping all night in there. Bring OFF. Bugs get bad down there. directly across from you are some reeds. Carolina rig a finger mullet or shrimp live, and flounder sit there too.
