I have a 96 basscat jaguar with mercury 225 efi. 3 blade 25 temptist prop. To get max top speed (70mph), I have to give it all the up trim I have and my rooster tail is shooting just about straight up. Does that sound correct?

I have always heard that if your rooster tail is shooting up that you are losing thrust, because it's just wasting it by throwing the water upward. I'm no expert so I don't know, that's just what I have heard, therefore, my two cents.

yeah, you don't want much rooster tail..if your running a chopper propeller jacked to the max then I can see a big rooster but not our bass setups...jet a jack plate and a water pressure gauge, put all your heavy tackle in the back of the boat and just run it till you have it tuned - note in the summer temps your not going to see big numbers, you will only get to tune it for summer now...good luck !

Rooster tail should be no higher than top of motor in most cases.

Chris, The very best place to post this is in the Bass Cat Boat .com find the Owners section and fire away. I know they the 'guys' over there are going to ask a ton of questions. Such as , Most recent Tune up, Compression on all 6 cly's, the real condition of your prop. How much weight do you tote? What speed have you reached, and how have you measured it? What condition is your hull and the kell and the pad ? Just to get you warmed up... Oh yeah, do you drag poles behind you?

With that boat & motor, 70 is not bad at all. Typically if you are shooting a big roostertail straight up off the back of the boat, you are experiencing a lot of prop slippage but still 70 is nothing to sneeze at with a boat that size with a 225. It all depends on your load. Your engine may be a little high for the load you currently have. Unless you have a hydraulic jackplate it will be hard to adjust to get it just perfect. The more weight you have in the boat, the deeper you have to have your prop in the water to lift it. Simple as that. Also as a general rule of thumb, a 4 blade prop will carry a heavy load better than a three blade but the 3 blade will be faster with a light load. If you have the CMC manual jackplate that most BC's have you will need to do do some experimenting if you want to get the optimum top speed from your setup. As one of the other guys mentioned above, try to put as much of the weight in your boat in the rear storage. Moving weight to the rear of your boat can add as much as 5 mph to you topspeed. Just know that the more weight you have in the rear of the boat, the slower the holeshot too. It is like a water balloon. You squeeze one end and it gets smaller while the other end gets bigger. At the end of the day, you have to select a prop that is a good middle of the road prop. I run a 25 Fury on my boat for the best day in-day out performance. Yes, my boat is slightly faster in the cooler months with a 26 Fury but when the weather is hot & humid, it won't turn it. It's just too much pitch for the motor. Hope that helps.

Hey Steve, Remember that old TXP I had you drill out for me trying to get it to ventilate on my Merc 300? When we were done it looked like swiss cheese!

you need to join bassboatcentral. Com. Then go to bass boat set ups. Look under the sticky section for prop to pad measurement. They have pics and all info on water pressure prop height and speed.

thanks for the info! Ive got the jackplate. Will someone explain how to measure the below pad part of it? Thanks in advance are you sure it's an 8" setback? the factory plate was only a 6" plate. if it is a 6, then i have 2" spacers here at the shop. it'll make a big difference in hole shot and top end. done it many times. i can install them here too.
