I went Saturday and one of the most interesting things I heard was Clunn's statement on spinnerbaits early Sat on the pro panel.
To roughly paraphrase:
"All I am doing all day is fishing a spinnerbait and I guarantee no one is doing what I am doing. All of the truly great spinnerbait fisherman are gone now, I mean dead. Kevin (KVD) doesn't understand spinnerbaits, today's pros don't understand them. Guys like Ricky Green understood spinnerbaits and how the blades effect it."
I think that is pretty close but maybe someone was recording it. KVD was in the Humminbird booth and not on the stage. He mentioned another gentlemen in addition to Ricky Green but I can't remember his name.
I hate to try to interpret anything here but after Clunn said he was throwing a spinnerbait all day Swindle said "that's what we needed to know" jokingly. That's when Clunn said "and I guarantee no one is doing what I am doing".
Thoughts?

Saying KVD doesn't know how to fish a spinnerbait is one B O L D statement. Did he elaborate in what exactly makes his sb throwing so special?

One very good technique I learned years ago in heavy cover...pitching a heavy spinnerbait next to/into timber/heavy cover and letting it helicopter down on a semi-slack line. But I doubt that's what Clunn's referring to. If KVD doesn't understand spinnerbaits, I sure as heck don't!

Could it have been taken out of context? Maybe he said it in a joking exaggerated fashion? I just don't see how anyone could think they have the right to say KVD doesn't know how to use a spinnerbait.

Its more than a bold statement... KVD knows how to fish a spinnerbait. He has two whole DVDs just about spinnerbait fishing, and I've become a much better angler by following his advice.

I think the vast majority of spinnerbaits sold on the market today come with willow-leaf blades, preference by the majority of consumers? I know at my age of 40, I haven't been introduced to the Indiana probably because you don't see as many in the stores or see them as much on Television.
Interesting comment about how the bigger fish view the water displacement!

If I'm choosing, I will put my money on KVD over Clunn with both fishing a spinnerbait....... EVERY SINGLE TIME

I would bet that gets under kvd's skin. If he knows one thing it's fishing spinner baits. He was doing that long before he got so good with crankbaits. I think I'm decent with one and I don't know half of what kvd knows.

I'd bet I don't know 1/20 of what either guy knows about throwing spinnerbaits.

I just don't see how anyone could think they have the right to say KVD doesn't know how to use a spinnerbait. I doubt it. Never seen Clunn say anything in a joking exaggerated fashion. He is all business all the time.

well Clunn can say that...because back in Clunn's days of being relevant everyone fished shallow water less than 6 foot - and all those guy's like Ricky Green and Jerry Ryne, Jimmy Houston, etc. they frontier that style...now regarding KVD - he pioneered the open deep water willow leaf blade technique...just my two cents...

I like Clunn, and see him plenty on the Bass Pro episodes, MLF, etc. But for him to suggest KVD doesn't "know how to fish a spinnerbait" is utterly ridiculous!! Clunn could retire off of what KVD has won using JUST A SPINNERBAIT!! This must have been a comment made in "jest"... Heck ol Jimmy Houston has probably caught 50 million bass on a Booyah spinnerbait alone!! Hank Parker is another one that made his living on a spinnerbait. I'd love to see this on video to see what he really said/meant. Wow...
