Have you guys been?? They're sure hyping up Picachos as the "new Salto". I've been wanting to do a trip to Salto my whole life. next year may be the year!!! For my buddy and I's personal calendar, we're looking at mid-January. Just wondering if any of you have fished down at one or both of those lakes in January and, if you have, what did you think? Is that a good time? Or, is it off-cycle enough that I should take the more personally challenging trip some other time in the year? January is twice as easy for me to go though.

Which lake would you recommend of those two? Or, do ya gotta do the combo? Also, am I right that there's an Anglers Inn AND a Ron Speed place? Anyone got any personal preferences between those two? Seems like they're both class acts, but would love to hear from somebody that has been to both of them.

What else do I need to know to plan this trip? Looks like it's a couple grand for the 4 days of fishing package. I know I've gotta buy a flight and a room in town for the last night. Are there any surprises I should know about with costs?? What's a normal tip amount for the guide each day and for the "staff" at the lodge?

Thanks for all the information!!!
Yancey

went to picachos last year and el salto this year....went last week of march both years...we went through ron speed and it was first class in every respect....fishing was tremendous at both lakes but we caught bigger fish at el salto.....my best fish was 8.80lbs but I had two fish on that I'm pretty sure were bigger(both dived into the trees and I couldn't stop them before they wrapped me up deep in the trees)...
tips are $20.00 per day for guide and $20.00 for the staff.......
I wouldn't hesitate to go in January...it's so far south that temps should be in 60's & 70's....if you want to research average temps in january, both picacho and el salto are close enough to matzalan,Mexico that you can use matzalan as your search point...
also I'll be glad to try to answer any questions you might have....

Do the two lakes pretty much fish the same? I know El Salto has fewer fish and bigger fish, so I'm thinking we'll do 2 days at each and get the best of both worlds. I love chasing numbers and my partner loves trophies. So, this trip is perfect!! I just don't hear anyone talking about fishing in January there so I'm worried it's not a great time to go. Hoping somebody will jump on here that has been at that time and tell me no worries. smile

Was using Ron Speeds rods a good thing to do??

You can't do any better than Anglers Inn.

no problems with rods at ron speeds lodge at picachos or el salto....big variety of medium price rods, can't recall name of the rods but believe they were made by loomis.....we caught about equal numbers of fish at both lakes but lot more 5-7lb fish on el salto.....comfortable rooms and great food both places.....if I go back,my choice would be 4 days at el salto in either January or feburary.....there should be some monster bass bedding in shallow water and if you chunk a senko up against the bank enough times, you gonna get a chance to battle with a fish of a lifetime...

I have been to pichachos three times with Speed and once with Speed to El Salto. You will have a great time with a great staff and catch a lot of fish at both Lakes. A 2 day trip 2 each lake is a great time.. January or Feb is a great time to catch big fish.. PM me if you want more information on either. Good luck!

Kinda sounds like I can't lose, but wondering now if I shouldn't just hit El Salto the whole time. Man, if I'm catching at least 50 fish per boat per day..................that's more than I've ever caught anywhere so it'll already be the numbers action of a lifetime. Is one lake more "predictable" or consistant than the other or if one lake is slow or off is the other one probably the same? I guess if they're both pretty awesome, the question is, does one offer the more frequent chance of me having a "shoulda been here last week" kinda trip like I always seem to have???

cost is gonna be $1,995.00 for lodge/fishing.....tips $160.00 ($20.00 to guide and $20.00 to staff each day)...I think transportation from matzalan by van was total of $70.00 round trip...you will spend one night in matzalan which will be approx. $80.00 for hotel and what ever you spend for dinner that evening....plus airfare from wherever you fly from...my airfare was $900.00 roundtrip from Atlanta to dallas to matzalan...
I fell pretty confident is saying that on either lake you gonna catch more fish in 4 days than you ever caught before unless you went to guerrero back in the early days....

We have done 2 on Salto and 3 on Picachos the last 2 years with Ron Speed . Everything was top notch and fishing was great. Rods are all TFO. Headed down to Huites to the new lodge next February, El Palomar and have 7 spots open at a good discount. We will fish 4 days. PM me if interested.
