I want to fish with my kids this summer (12 and 13) and have been thinking about hitting Palmetto. I think they are finally at a age that they are taking it more seriously.
I am in South Austin, anyone have any other recommendations for areas nearby? Planning on day trips so withing about 1-1.5hrs away.
As a kid I would fish Dime Box and a few other creeks and rivers. I used to live in San Angelo, but don't necessarily want to drive 3 hrs to fish and have to come right back.
Thanks in advance for any help.

The San Marcos has a healthy population of channel cats. TP&W stocks an ox bow lake at Palmetto but I can't say how it fishes. Only problem with the river is access. You can walk across it at a low water bridge that is used as a place to swim. Other than that, I can't help.

I figure I will try it out Mon. Drag a small bag of tackle, some worms, and a couple of rods and see. Worse case they will get practice casting and we'll go for a hike.
