 Catching shad

I have a dumb question. Can shad be caught in a bream trap? If so what would one use for bait?
I have been cast netting them, but from the bank I tend to tear up my nets. I just bought a new one and after one outing it has several holes in it. There is just too much hidden debris in Toledo Bend. It would be great if I could catch them in a trap and save wear and tear on my net.

Sorry but that's a no. Even if you could catch them they'd die in the trap. I have a suggestion, if you can get your net through bass pro and get gear guard for $7, when you tear it up, they'll replace it.

Ive caught them using a clover style bluegill trap.... but it needs to be checled often as they will die in it

Fresh dead works for blues, but I think they only eat algea.
