Do y'all think it's possible that the color of the bottom of a boat matters at all? I have a red/orange/yellow kayak (got that color for visibility/safety purposes), and sometimes I wonder in the back of my mind if those bright colors make me more visible or spook/scare off bass. Maybe a dumb question, but I'd like to know y'all's thoughts.

a guy told me once he would never buy a boat with a darker hull because the fish look up and think its a larger predator fish.

Light comes from above(sun) not underwater. A solid white object casts a shadow like a solid dark object does. You can be quiet and stealthy and not run right over the fish but you can not hide a 20' bass boat! :-)

I have thought about that as well. Are you catching any fish?

Under a few circumstances, it might matter a little: sight casting for shallow bass in very clear water Other factors are much more important: minimizing pinging, banging, clanking noises from your hull

As pointed out above though, he was fishing shallow, clear, low pressure water.

a guy told me once he would never buy a boat with a darker hull because the fish look up and think its a larger predator fish. This thinking is actually backwards. Biologically most aquatic animals are just the opposite and mainly because the way they sit/hide on the bottom and feed ambush and push prey to the top where there is no where else for the prey to run. Look at most all predators fresh and saltwater. They are light colored on the bottom alligators bass gar sharks frogs almost all aquatic animals have white/light colored bellies. So a light colored or whit hull may be worse than a dark colored. For the OP I don't think that the color has anything to do with catching fish. Typically in a kayak you are not fishing under your yak so the fish you are trying to catch on a given cast wouldn't see your yak color.

If a bass can feel a little yearling shad flick around in the water, they can feel a 20' boat and a troll motor..the color of the boat is irrelevant.

Thanks for the input. I typically try to stay as far away from my targets as I can get away with anyways, so yeah I doubt it matters too much. Probably COULD work on the banging/pinging around inside the boat a little more though.
