Getting ready to buy my first boat (new boat) and just looking for advice on what amount of haggling is normal when purchasing a new boat? Is it like buying a car and some good haggling is expected?

If so then what would be an acceptable amount to ask for? 10% discount? More? Additional items like electronics included, etc?

Half the fun is negotiating right? If buying a $40K car you go in offering $30K then plan to land at like $32K or $33K. Just not sure where to start on the boat.

Summer is not a great time to negotiate unless the dealer just has an overstock and needs to move units. There is not much incentive to come down if he has customers waiting to buy. Good luck.

There's no "sticker" price on boats, except trackers, and they don't negotiate off that.

The best tactic used on me? Customer asks what am I going to make on the deal? And then produce invoices to show it.

Dealer margins very wildly so that's actually a decent move, and this time of year, you can tell the guy $2,500.00 and that is a little lower than they want, but still a viable sale.

And let me assure you, the top line "cost" of the boat is quickly forgotten if they've done a schlock rigging job. THAT is the difference between long term love and short term hate.

I always haggle on prices, rarely ever pay retail on any major purchase.

Any price reduction as a result of haggling is strictly a feel good thing provided by the dealer. He knows how much he can discount and still make the profit margin he needs.

If they won't show you the invoice and work off of it walk out.

Credit Unions have the dealer cost on all vehicles. I know Xcel does.
