Found a 5th wheel we really like and looking to upgrade trucks down the road as well. Not in the market for either right now, but need to know if I should stop looking at 5th wheels. The model we're considering weighs 6,900 lbs dry and 8,500 max. Tundra max towing is somewhere between 9,800 and 10,500. Would it be ok towing the 5th wheel once a year on a long trip (1,000-2,000 miles round trip) and several other times a year on short trips (approx 200 miles round trip). Or do you really need a 3/4 ton to even consider towing a 5th wheel?

What's your payload and the pin weight of the 5th wheel?

Going by the book I think you are going to find your max payload is similar to your pin weight, and if its not already over your going to go over long before you put all the stuff in your truck that you want/need to.
I'm over my payload when I hook up the boat and go to the lake with my wife, mom, dad, and son, some of the 1/2 ton payload ratings are really low!
That said I think you will be fine, make sure you have an electric brake controller and I would probably not want to run it on the P tires that come with the truck.

Hitch weight is 820 lbs. It's the Winnebago Voyage 25RKS. Would love to pick up a discounted lightly used one in a couple years, but might be truck-buying before then and I don't want to get a pickup that can't tow the RV that I want.
At 820 lbs, that leaves me plenty of room for payload to stay under or right around the max for a Tundra. Payload rating will be 1,500 lbs to 2,000 lbs.
Note taken on the brake controller and tires. Thanks!

By time you are loaded, I would estimate 1000lbs. Not sure the payload capacity of the truck is 1500 - 2000 lbs. Check the sticker by the driver side door. Subtract the 1000 lbs plus the weight of the driver, your passengers, hitch and other cargo.
but like redchevy said, I've been over 4-500lbs before and I'm still alive.

Agreed on all counts. 820 dry means 1,000-1,100 fully loaded, especially since 5th wheel storage is typically up front. Driver & passengers would likely be 500 lbs. Other cargo could easily be a few hundred more. So if payload is 1,500 lbs, I could easily be 300-400 lbs over. But I don't think that'll be enough to be a major issue.
Definitely more borderline than I originally thought though. Half tons really aren't designed for even lightweight 5th wheels.

No sir. The payloads suck on most. Learned that the hard way, myself. Heck, the tongue weight of my travel trailer is around 1000lbs. I thought that 5th wheel would be 12-1500.

A 2wd single cab long bed has a payload rating of 2060.
Depending on what cab/bed configuration it could be as low as 1300-1400 lbs. I put 3000 lbs in the bed of a mid 90's 1/2 ton chevy not counting driver and pasenger... a far inferior truck to the tundra in every aspect... except maybe fuel mileage... and drove 200 miles with zero issues. The truck had 250k + miles on it of similar use on occasion. I don't think you realy have anything to worry about, but know that you will more than likely be over your payload.

Thanks yall
Samson - after doing some more research today, it appears that a normal hitch weight is much closer to what you stated. Not sure why this particular one is so low, but that's a good thing for me I guess.

Due to demand, many travel trailer and 5th wheel manufacturers are making super light models that can be towed within the specs of some half ton trucks. Not everyone can or wants to own a big arse truck they only need 1% of the time. I believe they even call them 1/2 ton towables.

That's exactly what this model is advertised as. Never heard the term before.

I pulled a 26 ft. fifth wheel all over Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri with a GMC Sierra 1500. Never had any problems at all. I added air shocks to level the truck when I hitched up.

I believe you will be over payload...pin weights are heavy..I wouldn't do it.....I am not doubting your info on pin weight, but where did you get the weight info?I have been on the hunt for a 5th wheel that I could tow and be in spec with my crew max and have only found pin weights north of 1k...if dealer is saying weight is 820 I would make them prove it to me,lots of times they claim under the actual weight just to get a sale.On the TT I bought their claimed weight was under by 600 + pounds.
