As the title says I'm looking for a place where I can take the wife and kids, (8 year and 17 year old daughters), to do some surf fishing and spend the day at the beach. We live in Katy and aren't opposed to driving a bit.

A little background: My folks used to live down in Gilchrist on the Bolivar Peninsula. We would go down and have a great time at their place. Then hurricane Ike came through and completely destroyed the place. They still have the lot they used to live on but nothing is there anymore. We drove down yesterday to see how things looked and that area is very slow to recover. The surf was not very far from hwy 87 and rollover looks like garbage. We aren't really interested in going back there to fish.

Ideally what we're looking for is a clean place where I can drive my truck on the beach and park, setup a day camp, and put out a couple or three surf rods. My truck is not a 4x4 so it needs to be accessible to 2x4.

We do have some family that live down in Edinburg and we do plan to visit them over the summer and fish the beach somewhere on SPI but that is a little far to just do a single day trip.

A two-ish+ hour drive seems reasonable to me though if the beach is nice and the beer is cold! grin

Ideas and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks guys!

Hello neighbor. West end of Galveston is a good choice, plenty of beach access and it's free. Hoping water is in good condition, may hit the specs.
