Saw this on Facebook from a shop right next to Whitney Dam: "We have been told to expect around 8 feet of water from Possum Kingdom because they need to repair a crack in the PK dam. We can't release water because of flooding in Houston area. So I'm guessing we face another closed lake summer."[i][/i]

I heard about a group of people that nearly got swept away last weekend out there. Lost a bunch of equipment and had to get rescued by game wardens.

Below PK its running 18,000 CFS. Definintely Not the time to be on the river. Near Glen Rose its 46,000 and that's all headed for Whitney.

Dang! The lakes - Ray Roberts and Lewisville are looking better all the time - kind of.

They're definitely holding water in Whitney, it's up 14' above pool right now and that's 10' higher than two days ago. They are only releasing 1,300 cfs at the moment. With all the rain I expect they'll have to start releasing a lot more pretty soon.

Yea gates will open up at some point. I pray it does not do any damage to homes downstream but glad it will put some new fish in the river.

19' now and still only 1600 cfs being released. I've seen it a bit higher but best I recall that was over 20 years ago. Whitney is in an unusual position for releasing water. Two major inflows join the Brazos north of Waco - Bosque River and Aquilla Creek (Aquilla would be called a river in any other state) drain into the Brazos and the COE controls the releases from those two lakes as well. They have to balance the outflow of Lake Whitney, Lake Waco, and Lake Aquilla or they can easily flood large portions of Waco. Sometimes I think they made a mistake when they put in that low-water dam in Waco as that limits how much can be released through the city. Maybe not though, I'm not a hydraulic engineer.

But soon Whitney is going to have to release a lot of water and I expect the river below Whitney will be higher than we've seen in a long long time.

26' and they are letting out about 2,000 cfs. Whitney was 27' in June last year, and it's no where near record height. I suspect that they will keep increasing flow steadily until they are releasing as much as they can without flooding Waco, and that means a couple of months of high flow.

I discovered on Saturday the current 2000cfs release is the amount of water that flows around the closed gates.. when the COE does finally open the gates the flow will jump much higher like in the 10000cfs and above.. That is what I want to see and video..

The river crested below Whitney at just shy of 25 feet at 12:30am last night, highest I've seen it in 40 odd years. The COE closed the gates a bit because of the rain and the river is down a couple of feet this morning to about 19 feet. We got about 6 inches of rain in an hour yesterday evening just after dark. One heck of a thunderstorm.
