I just started using soft plastic baits. I was using a spinning reel with 10lb line. I broke off a good bass, but felt it was hard setting the hook. What's the best line to use? I was throwing a grandebass rattlesnake weightless.

7'mh fast 15lb flouoro for light cover and rocks.
7'6'h fast 65lb braid for anything with thick cover or vegetation.

It all depends on the cover. I always fish the jungle while pitching and use 25# XPS Floro. from Bass Pro Shop. Loosing a big Bass is just not an option for me. In open water say with a drop shot rig then I drop back to lighter Floro.

Fishing from the bank calls for one thing and fishing from a boat calls for another.

If you insist on using a spinning setup for flipping/pitching plastics, then I suggest you use the biggest line you can get away with. I'd use 30# braid as a main line, then tie a 2 foot leader of this flourocarbon in 14# test. Or if your reel can hold it, spool it up with purely flourocarbon. The FC Sniper is good, quality line and I hardly ever break off on it. It's super strong and has incredible knot strength.

But like Donald mentioned (and he knows his stuff), it really depends on the cover you're fishing. As a rule of thumb, if you're fishing super heavy cover, go up in pound-test on the braid and flouro, and vice versa.

I was fishing lake worth, I wouldn't call it heavy cover at all. I was thinking that braid would be harder to cast. I don't have a dedicated reel just for flipping. Maybe going around 15# flouro?

Depending no your reel size, anything above 14# test can be difficult to use on a spinning reel. I can hardly even use anything above 10#. Spinning reels are not necessarily meant to be used for big line and flipping/pitching. However, it can totally be done; just as long as you have the right size reel.

I use a 7 ft heavy with 20# floro with 1/2 to 3/4 oz wts for larger baits or to get a faster drop with smaller baits. I usually use a medium heavy 7 ft with 17 lb floro and 1/4 to 5/16 for small baits.

I was afraid with no weight pitching it on a open face I would backlash alot.

Whatever you go with; it takes practice with that set up you have chosen. If I was using a spinning real set up I would have to spend days on end working that thing in the back yard. Weightless baits on a casting real is not as hard as you thank. These new ones are amazing. Again, just takes practice and knowing how to set the breaks properly for the size and weight of the bait being pitched.

I hear guys on here using braid all the time on spinning rigs. The only problem I have with it is when the wind is blowing hard. It has a mind of it's own and will find every bush to get into. 20 and 30 lb. braid is about half that size in diameter and should work fine on a decent spinning reel. So 20# braid is like using 10 lb. mono..

Personally I prefer a 7ft - 7ft 6in heavy action rod with 20-25lb floor

I have a fairly cheap 13 inception reel that I can zing weightless senko's on and rarely backlash. I also would not concider myself anywhere near a pro fishermen. On a cheapo medium 6 foot Shimano Rod I got on sale at Texas Tackle Warehouse for 19$. I feel like I can get enough speed on the short rod to zing the weightless thing accurately anything longer I have more chance to backlash/miss my target.

You should have no problem throwing those Rattlesnakes weightless, Once they get wet they weigh damn near more than your rod and will soak you on every cast lol. But I love them.

The Rings hold Tons of water, which make the bait much heavier after the first cast. If you are slinging them weightless you are slinging water everywhere on your cast out of the rings.

No matter how you have them rigged you will sling water out of the rings on a cast.
