Yellow cats will hit a crankbait. As will Flatheads

A few years ago, we were fishing for sandbass and hybrids along the dam at Richland Chambers. The crew that runs the Wildlife area behind the dam on FM 488 were mowing the fields. We kept seeing big fish hitting top water and motored closer to investigate. Catfish were feeding on the grasshoppers flying over the dam to escape the mowers. Just for a hoot, we scrambled around our tackle to find some live bait hooks and weighted corks. We started hand catching grasshoppers off the surface, put them on a hook and popped the corks across the water, letting the grasshoppers float on the surface. Man Oh Man it was fun watching those big cats make wakes across the top of the water to hit our grasshoppers. You could almost hear the theme music to Jaws movie. We were laughing so hard with all the catfish we were catching, several boats came over to see what the heck we were doing. Always considered the best example of being in the right place at the right time. One of our best fishing days and we don't ever fish for catfish.

Went out one day and caught a catfish and a fresh water drum on a rattletrap. Seen Gar follow a buzz bait multiple times but they didn't actually hit it (which is maybe a good thing)

They slirp them - I've caught ever species on fork on a yellow majic! Had a gator follow it for a bit too and was glad my reel ratio was a 9:1!
Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.
