Not trying to start an argument here but I am going to sell my diesel truck and downsize. It only makes sense for us since we have 5 kids and the tow rig for our future TT WILL be our 2500 Suburban. So my truck will pretty much be relegated to boat towing and farm type work (towing small tractor, some hay, nothing crazy, etc).
I have had GM gas trucks in the past and know they are capable but I'm not ruling out any of the others either. Now, I am not a guy who buys new, can't afford nor will I be able to justify that kind of payment ever again. I have a limit of about $22K that I want to spend. So that puts me in a truck in the 2006-2012 range with 80-120k miles on it. Only requirements I have are it has to be a full crewcab truck, 4wd and biggest V-8 available for that vehicle (or V-6 turbo for Ford).
Given those requirements, which truck would you look at and why? Remember, I'm not looking at the latest and greatest trucks out there. During those years those trucks would have had issues and complaints that may or may not have been addressed by now.
Let's hear it.....

Believe it or not there are some. But the pickin's for that are kinda rare. Longevity of that engine is what I kinda am concerned with since that price range usually means higher miles for that engine in particular.

Yes, that would be a major concern, I'm not familiar with their longetivity.

I have a 2004 double cab 4WD Tundra that has been great, 160,000 miles on the small V8 and pulling trailers a lot..... 19' bass boat, 20' gooseneck and 18' bumper pull and I also use the 4WD quite often. Regular maintenance only (including timing belt/water pump at 110,000) and still going strong and still feels 'tight'.

I wouldn't buy a used Ram/Dodge based on my experiences. The old GM 5.3l is a gutless tu rd and the 6.0l is a guzzler. I think used Toyota's are typically outrageously priced. That probably leaves the Ford for me.

I would shop Ford, dodge, and yota. There are certainly crew cab 4x4 hemi's available in that price range. When I was truck shopping a few years ago I found lower trim level new crew cab 4x4 hemi's for $25k(pre TTL) with all incentives and at the right time of the year.

The ecoboost has been around for 5 years now, I would think there are enough of them with some higher miles racked up on them to get a good idea. I know there are the people who scream about issues with them, but I think in reality they have been pretty decent over all. In the end I think any of them will probably do what you are needing them to do. For simplicity one of the v-8's from any of them is pretty tried and true at this point I would think.

I owned a 2011 GM 5.3. It was a good truck and did what I needed it to do while I had it. I sold it to my uncle and still do maintenance on it. Its got 60k miles on it has not been abused and uses 2 quarts of oil between 7k mile changes. And that's running mobile 1 synthetic from the first oil change on. I wont buy another GM AFM motor.

The 6.0L gm does drink the gas, I ran several work trucks with them, daily maintenance if needed and a preventive maintenance plan...they ran great without a lot of issues, until they blew the bottom end out thru the oil pan around 200,000 miles. Actually not too bad but the mileage sucked.

First ive ever heard of the 6.0 puking its guts routinely at 200k.

Now the poor fuel mileage and mild oil consumptions is well known, but heck its a big v-8 with rigged with the suspension and gears to be a work truck good fuel mileage was never one of its concerns.

What kind of experiences do you have with used Dodge/Ram trucks? Just curious as to what you are cautioning about in particular. I can get around the gutless portion of the GM V-8s with tuning and what not, it's a given with any truck I have in that it won't remain stock for long. I'm not talking high HP and racing but doing enough to it to have better performance and driveability. I do agree that Toyotas are high priced. I am just not very sure that the resale is really worth it. I personally rode in a buddy's Tundra Crewmax and while it was nice and looked nice, it seemed to be built cheap. Quality of interior seemed low and the doors seemed to be so "light" and thin. Kinda hard to explain but it didn't feel like there was any substance to them.

One question.

What is your current truck? If you have a pre emissions diesel in good shape and reasonable miles I would roll it till the wheels fall off, you probably not going to save much by going to a 1/2 ton.

Most 3.5l ecoboosts only have one problem...they eat spark plugs. I would want a 2013 or later because fewer claimed CAC condensation issues. Overall reliability is on par with most other engines but a V8 might be better for the long run. I would think cost of repairs would be cheaper.

I'd like to know more about this too! My '10 Suburban has the 6.0L and it drinks gas for sure but doesn't burn any oil and I'm using Amsoil extended life with their filter. Last oil change at the 6 month interval came back REALLY clean. I also noticed a decent mileage increase too. But I've yet to hear about any of them blowing the bottom end out....

Its more of a Chrysler thing. I've owned 5 and can't say I've been happy with any of them. They just seem to have more issues than the other makes, build quality and electrical.

ps - if you do go ecoboost, don't tune it.
