I cannot find the cause for the alarm sounding on my 1992 Mercury XR6. It is a fast repetitive alarm that starts as soon as I start cranking the motor. Oiler good and real good water flow through [censored] hole. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

Check the remote oil tank under cowl if it is full then the magnet may have broke loose from the float and making the low oil switch alarm. Unplug the wires from the switch to see if it stops, this happens with age and the remote tank has to be replaced. If the tank is low there is either a leak or restriction. Have seen the pickup tube screen in the primary oil tank get plugged up. Not sure if this is the model that has the plastic drive gear for the oil pump but those have been known to fail also. I'm sure Gary or Tommy even TLW will chime in to by morning. With the exception of the gear issue what I stated above has been from mine and a buddy's personal experience. Good luck.

The float switch cap can be replaced on a 2.5 Merc without replacing the reservoir. First thing to check is the pickup tube screen. Many other things can cause the oil alarm.

only three things can produce "oscillating" tone.... low oil or defective cap on motor tank, rotation sensor (sometimes works, most times doesn't), bad module.... ANY "oscillating tone" has ta come from tha module.. thats what it does...

being a '92 might be time for tha "oiler delete" thing anyway.... especially if you don't know tha complete history of tha motor...

There are a couple of more things that can cause the intermittent beep alarm. I have seen it when the kill switch is pulled and a bad power pack.

The engine starts right up and runs great. That would probably rule out the power pack, correct? I will check kill switch tomorrow. That is one thing I have not checked.

If motor starts up it is not the kill switch. Unplug the cap float switch. If beeping stops, the cap is bad, same on the rotation sensor. If the beeping stops the oil pump drive gear is out and you will need to start premixing the oil.
