.....probably going to sell my almost new Garmin 73SV for $500, put another $500 BPS gift card with it to buy another unit. Looking for opinions. Definitely a Navionics fan.

I don't know if it's the best but the Helix 9SI is in your range. I'm happy with mine so far

The standard mapping isn't much. I bought the Nav Hotmaps Platinum chip and it is excellent.
If you aren't interested in networking multiple units and don't mind a slightly smaller screen you can get the Helix 7Si and still have cash left for a Nav card.

Is there any single reason(s) o buy a HB over a Lowrance or vice versa. I know that maybe a Chevy vs ford question but not sure if there were real reasons why to pick one over the other.

The guys who run HB's will tell you they're the best, same for the Lowrance guys. I'm totally Lowrance because I'm convinced they have the best technology and easier to operate. Best advice is go where they sell both and let the salesman demo both for you. That's how I chose mine.

$800 difference between Gen3 9" vs Helix 10"- that's a huge gap.

That's apples and oranges. The closest between the two brands is the Elite Ti series for Lowrance and Humminbird Helix. The only problem is the Lowrance at that level maxes at 7". You can still get Gen2Touch Lowrance Units at a better price range.
Go to a store, and play around with them to see what you like.

I'm not sure what your going to gain over the garmin only spending 500 more. If the map is your main concern you might check out the garmin hd ultra map upgrade and save yourself some money.

I have the Lowrance Elite7 ti and love it. The touch screen is fast and when paired with the Navionics chip you can prepare for your next days fishing right in your garage. Love it.

I love my Lowrance HDS Touch - I almost went with the HB Helix, but I had Lowrance Gen 1 on my boat already, so it was easier to stick with Lowrance. I'm glad I did, but either of them are good units. Just depends on what you are used to probably.
