I made some juglines last week with Gatorade bottles and 5' of line. I used 3/0 circle-sea hooks attached to a main line with mono and a barrel swivel. I chase the jugs around on my kayak when i see action. The 18-24" cats I'm catching are swallowing the hooks.

What size/style hooks do you recommend?

I have been using 4/0 circle hooks on mine and never had a cat swallow one yet. I have my jugs anchored with bricks ,but I wouldn't think that would make a difference. Good luck

Try a 7/0 Circle Sea. I use them on Rod and Reel, and catch 2# fish and up. 9 times out of ten, they are always hooked in the right side of the mouth.

Maybe my lack of weights is the issue. Nothing for the fish to pull against to set the hook in its mouth.

Jason if you are catching eaters and keepers for the freezer make some 4 or 5" leaders so when one swallows the hook just unsnap the leader and leave it in the cat until you clean them.

I use 8/0 octopus and have even had 2# blues swallow the hook. If they are gorging they don't mess around.

From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."

Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

I fish the same set up you are using. I use 2oz weights for those size of bottles with a #5 circle hook. My line is 8' with the hook on the bottom and the weight about 12" from the hook. I also have some rigged with #2 treble hooks for punch bait. The 2oz weight seems to give a good slow float for that size of bottle. fish

I use Galv True Turn hooks, due to the fact that I also fish Texoma and the salt is hard on the others. #4 or 5

I use 6/0 Kahle Hooks. Most are in the side of the mouth. Every once in a while one will swallow, but it seems to be the smaller fish. (makes no sense)

I use 2/0 circle hooks on mine. I rarely have an issue with a swallowed hook.

I use 7/0 sea circle they work well, but make them detachable if you are cleaning them.

mustad 34009 #1 if you are after eaters and baiting with worms, hotdogs,or dough bait. The hook has a large eye so using #18 tared nylon is easy.
