Bought mine in Louisiana when I lived in Dallas. It wasn't a big deal at all. If I recall they filled out all the TPWD forms and sent me in my way with the stack of completed paperwork to take to TPWD. Also, I had to get the trailer plate from the county tax office.

They didn't charge LA sales tax. I believe sales tax is paid when you register the boat so I only paid TX sales tax.

When you purchase a boat, you should get identical paperwork no matter where it is purchased. Refer to TPWD warnings about what you should get so that you don't get scammed. Be sure you know what you are doing.

You do not pay any sales tax to the host state when a boat is purchased out of your resident state. Don't be fooled into letting anyone collect such a tax, as there is NONE. You bring all the paperwork back to Texas and then go to TPWD offices to title and register the boat. That is when they will collect Texas sales tax from you, along with fees for title/registration of the boat and motor. You will go to your county tax collector's office to register the trailer. Depending on gross weight capacity of the trailer, it may also be titled, and an inspection may be required. They will collect sales tax on the trailer portion of the purchase. For this reason, be sure your bill of sale states the amount of $$$ for the boat and motor, and the amount for the trailer as separate prices. This part is very important. If you do not, you'll pay a lot more tax, some of it double.

Everything Flippin-out said is 100% accurate based on my experience. I don't think my bill of sale broke out the trailer price separately, but I don't remember that being much of an issue. That may depend on which person you happen to get at the window. I thin they made me estimate the value for the boat and the value of the trailer. Obviously the value of the boat is far more than the trailer for most new boats.

Less than two years ago I bought a complete rig including trailer from an individual. The bill of sale had one full price stated for all. When you have that, TPWD is going to charge tax on the FULL AMOUNT. They don't give on this. Now, you still haven't registered the trailer. When you go to do that, they are going to collect tax as well. They may be willing to accept your word as to a reasonable value for the trailer, but whatever trailer value you pay sales tax on, you WILL be paying double on that portion. So, the moral of this story is you can avoid several hundred in sales tax if you get an itemized bill of sale.

I don't remember being double taxed. I would have been pretty irate. That said, the TPWD website says the bill of sale should be itemized, breaking out the price of the trailer. Flippin-out's advice is good.

You are charged sales tax on the trailer at the time of purchase but only the registration fees for it when you go to DMV to get tags.

When I bought my boat from a dealer in Tennessee, when I picked it up he had all the paper work in order. He had down loaded the Texas forms. I did not pay sales tax on the trailer in Tenn. When I registered the boat in Texas, I paid the normal fees plus sales tax on the boat and motor. When I registered the trailer in my home county, I paid registration and sales tax.

Just make sure the trailer is priced separately on the bill of sale.

Reread the thread title again. I don't believe that sales tax is paid on a trailer when purchased in another state - any differently than the outboard or boat. Yes, if buying from a dealer in Texas, the sales tax will be charged and paid when the sale paperwork is completed and the rig is delivered.

Also, you do not go to DMV to get tags - you go to the tax collector for your Texas county of residence.

in addition to the titles (okieland does not title trailers) you need a bill of sale for the boat/motor/trailer ALL SIGNED BY THE DEALER ON LETTERHEAD and each individual as boat and motor go to one office and trailer goes to another.

take this with the titles to the tag office and you should be fine, if it is a dual axle you may need an inspection now (based on wght rated).

make dam sure you get the signed bill of sale for each or you will be doing the phone call shuffle for a couple of weeks.

had to do this for my champ when I moved down and trailer was all I had a problem with due to titles being in my name already.

and you can not register in okieland if you don't have residence there, it would simplify things but won't work.
