Is wet sanding first, before waxing the best method to bring back the smoothness and shine? If so, what grit sandpaper do you start with and what brand of wax works best?

Wash with ammonia/water 50/50 mix, let dry. Hand wet sand 800 grit, wash surface with water. Hand wet sand 1000 grit, wash surface with water. Hand wet sand 2000 grit, wash surface with water and let dry. Apply polish/wax. I use Pro Tech. Here is video. I did not use any power tools on mine. Depending on condition of your gel coat you may need to power polish.

^^^This with one thing I compounded mine before waxing or sealing. I used 3M marine compound with finishing material then 3M perfect it finishing compound. I will tell you that the compounding made the gel look 2 feet deep shine is awsome. Now the bad I can see every mistake sags, print through, and yes runs in the gel that was done by factory.

I am thinking about doing my 18' Ranger. How many sheets of each sandpaper will I need? Gunnels, sides, and maybe limited parts of the interior.

Just started mine yesterday, I'm using a white vinegar and water 50/50 wash with 600 grit then to 1200 grit. Not seeing a shine after the scrubbing part but I'll update once I get the power buffer to it this weekend.
