My frustration was I couldn't get them to blow up on it period! I fished everything I saw on Roberts that looked froggy without success!

See you on the lake and have a great day!

Frog fishing is my favorite summer technique. I'll throw a frog all day long.

Here are the changes I have made that have drastically improved my hook-up ratio:

I replace my frog hooks on every new frog. I always go up one hook size more (my favorite frog comes with a 3/0, so I replace it with a 4/0 hook made by either Gamakatsu or Trokar) than the original and use extra wide gap hooks. The larger hook pushes the points back slightly and the wide gap pushes them out slightly.

The larger hook does make them slightly less weedless but the trade off is worth it.

I use a 7'6" heavy rod with a fast tip and a Daiwa Tatula high speed reel with larger handle knobs or with reel grip covers. I also put a Cush-it rod handle cover on so that I can have more leverage (by putting the rod against my body and not just relying on my arms) in the hook set which allows me to put more power into it as well

FYI - I added hyperlinks for item references.

I have been throwing a frog a ton this year and have approx. a 75% catch rate. If you are missing a bunch of strikes in a row try switching to a different color frog. Sometimes they just don't want a frog and will only swipe at it. I'd say one of my favorite frogs is the Academy H20 in Bluegill. The finish will flake off after 5 fish but they are cheap. All I do is trim about 1/2" off one leg and let it rip. I don't mess with the hooks or anything else. I do subscribe to the MH rod. I use a 7'6" Bass Pro Carbonlite which is nearly perfect IMO. In fact, I have two of them set-up exactly the same- paired with a Lews 8-1 reel. I personally haven't ever needed more backbone and that is pulling frogs out of heavy, nasty stuff.

this!

Bend the hook points outward just a hair. Do this by grabbing the hook just above the bend, between the hook point and bend of the hook shank. Bend each hook point slightly outward from the bend. This will have your hook points in the striking position instead of laying flat against the side of the frog. And it will still come through the slop just fine. Nothing wrong with your set-up.

My boys!

I do hunt, and I do fish, and I don't apologize to anybody for hunting and fishing.

If you are landing 3/4 on a frog you are good. Only thing I would suggest is maybe reeling 2-3 times before you set the hook. Sometimes this will definitely remove all slack and practically set the hook before you actually swing. I think you are fine with your rod choice. I use a heavy-fast rod in 7'6" with a 9.1:1 Lews paired with 65lb braid. Works like a charm.

Remember, you are doing the right thing if you are getting blow ups. Most of the time you just have to make 1-2 small adjustments and go back to work! Good luck man!!!

I like a heavy over a MH all day for frog fishing. To each his own I guess.

OP, I also use a 7'6 Micro Magic Pro for frog fishing. Just bend the hooks out a little, like others have stated.

As stated above, sometimes they are just not eating it well enough. I went through this a few weeks back in a working man's tournament. One week, I missed 1 fish and caught probably 15-18 in 2 hours. The next week was the complete opposite. I caught 1 and missed around 15 bites and had 2 come unbuttoned. (SAME STUPID FROG with the hooks bent out slightly) bang

Set the hook first, ask questions later!!!

Use this trailer hook. Everyone's advice is spot on here, but I can tell you this. These work and they are pretty much weedless from my exp. Wait your couple of seconds before setting the hook, as with any frog bite, but this little trailer hook will make all the difference in the world and improve your confidence in a heart beat.
