What is a good easy bait to catch bluegill and perch? Taking my boys to a lil pond in awhile and I saw the prior threads about using crickets and nightcrawlers.

Do tiny cut pieces of bacon still work well? I'll pick up some nightcrawlers for sure too.

I want to put them on some fish and fun to get them interested. We have 4 ultra light poles & reels, size 6 cricket hooks (quicker for me to get the fish off because of long shank) and tiny split shots and tiny bobbers.

Any advice for better baits would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

MrNovice, there are times when the fish are extraordinarily active and during these times they will eat about anything you throw in the water. Day in, day out, however, the best and surest way to catch them is by using live bait. Small pieces of worms work great. Crickets are good bluegill baits also.

Thank you! Will sure get nightcrawlers and cut them up, and guess we'll head to the pet store and grab some crickets too. Live bait is best for us, my kids are young and fishing artificials will need to be taught another time, just want to get them interested for now. Easy fast fishing!

If you can find bream bedding any thing tossed in or around the bed will get hammered as soon as it hits the water. I prefer plastic nymphs or small jigs when fishing beds. If you're searching tip them with chartreuse Nibbles.

Alright, update time! We skipped out on the crickets, but probably shouldn't have. Hit Academy and bought nightcrawlers and looked for the Berkley Gulp Alive Waxies like Smurfs said. Those Berkley baits must work because they were sold out of 3 rows of them except the "corn" bait. Bought that since it was all they had, and also used cut strips of bacon that I brought from home.

Hit 2 ponds and both those suckers were OVERRAN with freaking turtles everywhere. There were so many, I swear they were trying to mate with our bobbers! They would see the bobber up top after casting in, and there would be 4 turtles instantly heading for it.

We did catch a few bluegill on the worms and the fake corn, but the bacon was a horrible idea! It was like a turtle frenzy all over the bacon. We caught about 15 turtles, thank God none of them swallowed the hook! That's why I prefer the long size 6 cricket hooks. Usually fish have a harder time swallowing the whole hook and at least the tip is sticking out of their mouth to unplier it loose. All turtles were released back unharmed, but looking back I should have tried to skip a few like rocks across the top of the water.

Overall wasn't what I was hoping for, but we still got outside and got to spend time together. So that was a win! I'll definitely plan further ahead next time and have the baits we need ready before heading out!

Appreciate all the help and tips guys! Tight lines!!!

It's all about good times with the youngins and the memories in the end. Three of my 4 kids wound up getting hooked by their siblings with rooster tail treble hooks. We all laugh about it when it comes up. The oldest got hooked by his sister right next to his jugular and that was scary for us all. They all were removed at the E.R. Due to the locations of the hooks. We still have the Rooster Tails.

Wow, that's scary but practice makes perfect. My oldest 2 were on their own today. Gave them poles rigged up, showed them once how to cast, told them "it's all yours now". They baited and cast no problem, was sure they were going to at least chunk a pole once. Never happened. Even fished right next to each other under the same shade tree and only casted over each other once. I still cast for the younger one, but he did set the hook on one of those turtles! Good times!

When the turtles move in, it's the end of our fishing day, no matter what species we are targeting. It signals lunchtime for us... and a lil' nap! wink
