Wanting to get into dock shooting. Will just be another way the son & I could catch the crappie when we can't locate them on the bridge pillars. I'll have to learn then teach him , he's 7 but quite handy with a rod n reel.

What do you guys think is the ideal set up with OUT breaking the bank.

I used 5.0 to 5.6 foot rods with 1000 size spinning and bright line orange or yellow,6 lb test. Ugly stick used to sell a 5 foot spinning combo that would be perfect for 7 yo. Could bang it into all the docks he wanted and not hurt it while learning. The bright line is to watch for line jumps when they hit. The set up was about $30.00 they had them at bass pro and academy.

Walmart is the cheapest for the ugly stik combos. They are available in spinning or spincast models.

Go to Walmart and buy a couple Zebco Slingshot spinning combos. They are $9.88 apiece and work great. They are all that I use now and I have at least 6 more combos in the boat that cost a lot more than $10.

If all else fails they will make great pan fish or light weight set ups.

Set up 2 5gal buckets with a board across them in the back yard and a chair about 15' away. Both of you watch Wally Marshall's You Tube video's on dock shooting then just PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!! Once you get to where you can shoot a jig 25-35 ft past the buckets, lay the buckets down on their sides with the board across them (making the space half as tall) and keep practicing! I saw Keyboard shooting 10-15 ft past a space that wasn't more than 4-5 inches high Saturday morning!

That's pretty much exactly what I was thinking except I was going to use milk crates. 2 tall to start with then down to one. About 12-14" tall.


Shooting 15' ft through a 5" opening is beyond awesome !!!
