I am new to fly fishing and I had a little time this morning to try out my new fly rod. Surprisingly, the bluegills in the creek were hitting dry flies and nymphs with gusto! They weren't very big, but I had a blast. My first cast was on the water for a few seconds and this little guy hit my fly like he was a Largemouth Bass.

Cast after cast, they just kept biting.

In about an hour, I caught and released 20 or 25 little 'gills.

Thanks for sharing, those little ones are frowned upon by some but it is fun to realise you fooled it into thinking it was food.
Be aware that some big fish abide in those little Creeks and they do surprise on occasion.

I was hoping to find bigger fish, but just to be fooling them with a fly rod is enough for me. I had more fun in the creek casting flies than I did the same day going catfishing at Joe Pool. Because of that, I bought a 3WT rod today!

I got out again this morning to Echo Lake in Fort Worth. I am really enjoying fly fishing. I never understood the attraction of it,,, until I tried it. I carry a rod and reel in the truck everywhere I go, it's rapidly becoming an obsession!

Sandy you sound like me. I'm just getting into the sport myself, but I'm having a blast with it. I target perch in the Arlington and surrounding areas, and have found a few very nice spots recently. Most of my luck comes on a size 14 stimulator. I try to throw something else, but I usually have the most luck with one of those trying to mimic a bug that has just hit the surface. The bream seem most interested while the fly is still floating. Many of them jump out of the water to eat the fake! It's a blast, and I look forward to finding new spots and continuing to improve my fly casting. I think today I actually looked like a real fly fisherman laugh

I'm not a chick.

There is a reason a lot of kids get their start catching little blue gills in ponds and creeks. As fly fishermen I think we just never grow out of that phase. I have been seriously considering getting a 3wt because catching the little guys can be so much fun. The first fish I ever caught on a fly rod was a tiny 4 inch brown trout. I still remember it better than some of the largest fish I have ever caught.

Haha..."not a chick". Seriously though, I am enjoying my new addiction! Yep, the 'gills really hit the dry flies and even the nymphs hard when they are hungry. I was just using a generic, cheap, mass produced fly and they were hitting it with the gusto of a big largemouth bass. I've also had good luck using a black wooly bugger for bluegills and even black bass.

Sandychaser,

Not sure what part of Arlington you live in, but check out Southwest Nature Preserve. It's got 4 ponds 2 of which I know have lots of fish. The south pond has a pier and lots of sunfish and if you hike just a little the main pond has some really big bluegills and tons of 11 - 13" bass that are fun on a fly rod.

Woolly Bugger during the day and poppers surface flies near the moss line as it gets dark.Lots of moss and weeds close to the bank and trees make backcasting difficult but the dam area and the far end of the main pond are capable.

Probably TMI for the internet but someone told me so just passing it along.

Catch and release only.

j_hirn2, we've been down there a couple of times. I've fished the largest pond once this month and only caught one sunny, but he was a nice slab. My wife and one of my daughters went to the pond with the pier for the flyfish 101 and caught a whole mess of 'gills on floating spider flies.

You are correct, catch and release only. I don't care, I just love fly fishing!
