So in dedicating this summer and the rest of this year to trying to figure out the blue cats in a west texas lake (alan henry) and 8 figured to start out juglines would be a great way to start patterning them.
So, to those of you that jug fish, how do you make your jugs, and what weights do you use? Also, what's the best way to transport them in the yak?
I'm thinking pvc pool noodle jugs with a 2 ounce bank sinker would work, but I don't know if that weight is heavy enough. Videos are welcome as well as any advice!
Probably going to use 5/0-8/0 circle hooks with live bluegill, cut shad, chicken breast to start off

I usually use 1/2 - 1 lb of weight on the jug line or more, the combination of the weight and the resistance from the jug is going to set the hook. I make my jugs out of pvc and pool noodle and you can put a 3 inch piece of rebar in them to make them stand up on the strike so you can see them and run them down before a big fish will get under a stump or lay down and you won't get the rig back.
I pattern a lake by putting them out at different depths and drifting the same area, some days the drift will get you more fish than the jugs and other days it is the jug. Concentrate on main lake points with channels nearby, channel bends, humps with channels nearby and channel ledges.
My final suggestion is to wait until the last week of June or so, they are going to be up the creeks and rivers spawning soon and won't be back down and in summer form until then.

Good idea on waiting until the spawn is over! It's a long paddle up the river from the only ramp on alan henry. Thanks for all the advice Bert

Kelly thomas is the guy to talk too. He gave my girlfriend a jug. Very nice and he catches some fish.

I am also a novice fisherman. Bert, how do you set up your jugs to account for the depth changes in a lake that is over 40' deep in places? I've read to set your bait 3' and 6' off the bottom of the area you are fishing. So, should I just tie on a 30' piece of main line to the weight and let the jug float wherever in 15-25' FOW for example?

A good tip is to limit your hooks on the jug becasue of the limited space you have on the yak. Just be safe to not get snagged or tangled when hauling the jug in with multiple hooks.

I run two hooks on my jug, one at 3 and one at 5 feet and I clip a float on at about 7 feet to keep everything off the bottom. I try to keep multiple main lines and set them to the depth close to where I have the jugs. For example I have jugs in 12 foot and the deepest water nearby in a creek channel is only 16 I will have a 17 foot line on and tie up the line to 12 foot with a rubber band that will pop off if a fish puts tension on it. The same thing if I am fishing on a point in 12 foot with a river channel 40 feet deep nearby, I have a 40-42 foot line tied up to the depth I am fishing.

Could you possibly elaborate a bit more on the rubber band and how you have it set up on your jug to account for the deeper water?

KVT (kelly) has a fantastic design. Im not sure of the specifics, but I think it involves 4" PVC, Caps, and eye bolts. It looks pretty easy to make and almost effortless to deploy.

Here is one we have been using for kayak juglining... scaled down version of the pvc/noodle design. Also, includes other jugline setups that others have used - Jug Line Fishing.

Teen, http://youtu.be/w0Hy3iTVhtQYou don't need eye bolts or any special knots. 40-50' of cord works great around DFW. Most of the yr they will be In 25' water or less. This video Isnt the best quality or easiest to watch but it shows everything u need except how to tag your jugs. I use a variation of whats In video. Pool noodles work better 4 me rather than pipe insulation. In my opinion pipe insulation does not provide enough buoyancy. i found I lost more fish than i hooked With not enough buoyancy/resistance. Suggest u only Make a few to experiment with at 1st. U may find u dont want to jug later. Dollor store or old batteries, rebar inside your pvc will work well. weight Inside pipe to length of noodle and pvc length is Important If u want to see/show strikes with small fish. Big cats (15# plus) will stand your jugs up no matter what n will easily pull It under when they strike, swim off, feel or see u. 2' from bottom - 5' will catch em. Some hooks work far better than most. Rig jugs for 2 hooks but run just 1 till u get the hang If your completely new to jugging. Setting jugs In right depth for time of yr is key. The contour of the sourround water is also key. Run your jugs in a line so u can spot/track them better. 6-8 jugs will fit in a bucket if you build them right. Good luck ;-)

I made mine out of 2" PVC. A little heavy duty but very durable.
I landed a 8lb Channel out of a Kayak. Tried a 28lb and went back to the jon boat.

Okay here is my set up. My basic set up; buy a 10' piece of 3" light weight PVC, the kind used for drainage. Two 3" light weight caps per jug. The cheapest foam crack sealer you can find and an eye hook with a washer and a bolt. I can make about 8 jugs per 10' pipe. All I do is cut the pipe the length I want and glue a cap with an eye bolt through it to one end. Fill the pipe about 1/2 way with foam and let it set overnight. That will be the bottom. The next day glue the other end cap on and you are done. I also use bright orange duct tape and wrap one time around the jug just under the top cap so I can see the jug from a distance. Attach the line (I like heavy mono, cord knots too easy) to the eye hook at the desired depth and fish. You can loop the line through the eye bolt to maintain the proper depth. I use two circle hooks per jug tied to the main line via a barrel swivel, this prevents twisting. I use about 12 to 16 oz. of lead per jug. I have found that small bungee cords are a good way to keep the line around the jug when not in use. Retrieving the jugs; I bought a 1-inch dowel and screwed a hook on the end of it to grab the line. Where to set: The deepest I have set, and caught, is around 25. Deeper=dinks, at least for me. I dont usually go less than 5 with 10 to about 18 usually being best most year around. I stay near my jugs and re-bait or check them hourly. Cost PVC pipe $7 to $10 Caps $1.48 at Lowes Spray $4.98 at Home Depot you can do 7 or 8 with 2 cans eye bolts, whatever you want to spend. I found some Stanley eye bolts with nuts for $1.33 each.
Common carp 26 Goldfish 9.78lb Mirror Koi 14lb Koi 16lb Channel Catfish 26lbs Blue Cat 30lb Bass 9.5lb

Awesome! I still need to go get materials, just gotta find the time to do it all. What do you typically use for the weights?
