I was hoping someone could tell me how this scam works. I have my boat listed for sale and I was contacted by what initially appeared to be an interested buyer. However, the person has few questions about the boat but is very interested in telling me how he is away on assignment but will buy the boat anyway and needs to pay with a PayPal account. He repeatedly asks me if I have a PayPal account and if not then to set one up. I am not a PayPal user so I don't know how that process works and of course I am not going to fall for this scam. I am curious how the scam works though if anyone has any information to share (hopefully not from a bad personal experience). Thanks for your help.

Just ignore them. Lots of scams out there involving PayPal. Cash, a verifiable cashier's check or a transaction at a bank or financial institution is the only way to do it.

Totally a scam!!! I deal with cash only. Use caution on cashier's checks, there are a lot of counterfeit ones out there.

I think they will give you a fake paypal account site and you enter your personal information there, and then they have access to what ever you inputed, like bank account routing number, Credit Card Information, and personal information.

best I can figure, they need only 2 parts of your paypal acct to hack it. hence asking for your name, cell #, etc
then they take or spend any monies in there, apply for/max out attached credit cards, etc
just [censored] with them, they'll get pissed when they find out you're wise to'em & go away.
got an email yesterday stating that Sir George Harrison had risen from the grave just to loan me some money, lol
it's truly amazing, sometimes

Was trying to sell a camera last week on Craigslist. The "buyer" kept saying how he was buying camera for someone overseas and sent me the address. He then sent an email from "PayPal", which was making me ship the item and enter the shipping number before it would deposit the money into my paypal. I was worried it was a scam and Called PayPal to check, good thing I did. The customer service told me that there is no emails, if someone sends you money there is no question and it shows up immediately. Be careful, I was in a rush to sell the camera and had a weird last second feeling and it saved me a lot of money.

I got this multiple times when selling my truck on Craigslist a few months ago... I just started ignoring them as soon as I saw "I'm stationed at such and such base". Gets old really fast.

Ok so I pretended I set up a PayPal account and asked what to do next. The answer was to tell them my PayPal email account and full name under which I set up the account. The only question on my mind now is what answer I will make up to respond with to waste more of their time.

The scammers are using the English language in their communication with you, but rarely do they really understand much of what it means to actually speak and use English. Therefore, you can have fun with them such as with the email address suggested earlier, or other creative ideas.

I have had a fun time making up crazy names when they want my name. If they keep the conversation straight, you know they can't even tell the joke is on them. Who wouldn't say "What the heck?" if I told them my name was "Peter Rabbit" and I live at 123 Fox Lane in Briar Patch, USA?

A guy on an offshore oil rig wanted to buy my bike. Must be one big oil rig to have room to ride a VTX1800.
