This topic has been beat to death a million times, so let's do it the easy way.
What is the max amount you're willing to spend and where are these (or this) going? Bow, console???

Everyone has way too many personal likes and dislikes to support any one. For many the top 2 are Humminbird and Lowrance in no specific order. Look at both. Look at options you want, options they offer, and the necessary components it takes to run the system (there are differences) and narrow it down to 1-2 of each brand and then bring your question back here.

I have had both. I like the KISS principle. Keep It Simple Stupid Currently I have Lowrance because that was what was on the boat when I got it. Sonar and side scan work extremely well on the Lowrance. They also worked just as well on the bird. If I had to outfit a boat with new electronics I would most likely put Humminbirds on it not because of the quality of the images on screen but because the birds are just a lot more user friendly for me and with a lots less parts and pieces to deal with. Now if I was going real high end 3D I would be inclined to go with Lowrance.

I go with reliable technology - a sash weight and a piece of rope. I'm surprised the market leaders haven't capitalized on this proven method!

That's not flashy enough for today's modern fisherman who needs to look good on the water. Now make that weight out of tungsten and use a Dyneema rope . . .
But seriously, one thing to consider (depending on the type of fishing you do) is trolling motor integration, which would rule out Garmin. Being able to tell the trolling motor where to go on the chart is incredibly useful for sandbass/striper fishing. I will give you my Ipilot Link remote when you pry it from my cold dead hands.

3D belongs in the Yep, another failed attempt to compete with the Humminbird 360. The 1st attempt in the Spotlight Scan transducer was failed and they cant even give them away. Right now they are offering $300 rebates on the 3D to make it appealing. Sorry if this upsets some Lowrance guys but simply stating the facts. This is not an attempt to bash Lowrance.

I like both 360 and 3D. I like being able to see in front and all around but I also like to see in a manually rotated 3D picture. I'm a poor ol boy so I'll have to make do with my antique stuff that's already paid for. The nice thing about 360 is it lets you know exactly where to cast for certain types of fishing.
