Hi everyone,
I’m new to the forums, mostly because I’m a canuck and Texas is LONG friggin’ way away, well at least it was. I now have some plans to be in the Houston area this year. I’m wondering if you guys have any suggestions for a good (great would be better) bass guide on Lake Conroe? Any help would be great.
Thanks!

There really aren't any bass guides on Conroe any longer. Most are multi-species focused and fish out of center consoles or on pontoons. I fished with Butch Terpe years ago and would recommend him. http://www.lakeconroefishingguides.com/Butch_Terpe/butch_terpe.html

I'm actually looking to get on Conroe to get to know the lake a little - I've made the BASS Nationals that are happening in October and given the distance from Toronto ON it isn't really feasible for me to drive down. Only option is to find someone on the water. I like to get out on water bodies a couple months ahead of an event just so I know how I need to prepare for the actual tournament.

That would be a weak plan.

Maybe an option, I don't know. I would look into seeing if Keith Combs would be willing to take you out. He guides on Rayburn and might not mind a few extra days on Conroe given it's the location for the next Classic. Long shot for sure, but given his record on Conroe that time of the year.. might be worth a call to find out!

I can not recommend a guide for you. Why Conroe does not have a few working bass guides (focused on bass) is a little complicated to explain. However, the lake produces very close to some of the best lakes in the state. The results below are from last weekend in a 40 boat team tournament. Not bad for late May.

A Bass guide would starve to death. Day in and day out not much of a numbers lake. Solid average fish though.
Guides need to bend a few rods every time out. If you saw the rest of the standings there would be some low weights on some pretty good anglers. Your either on them or your not.

Butch Terpe is a great guide whether you are interested in bass, crappie or catfish. Good guy, too.

The rest of the Conroe results looked pretty typical for team tournaments on the the top 50% of lakes in Texas. Lake Conroe is not a novice angler lake for 10 months of the year unlike some other lakes where lesser anglers can beat the bank or throw at visible cover such as grass.
