The family and I are headed to the Guadalupe River this weekend; it looks like the house is located just south of Canyon Lake, directly on the river. I'm not a fly fisherman, so my son and I will be using baitcasters and spinning reels out of kayaks and off the bank. I consider myself a well versed fisherman on lakes and ponds, but I'm clueless on what works on the river.

Does anyone have recommendations on tackle or where I can find a good fishing report for the Guadalupe River? Every website I've found so far is strictly for fly fishing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Scott

"Just south" would put you in the trout area of the river. From the dam to Gruene. Mepps spinners on those spinning rods will cover them. For bass it's hard to beat a jig head with a curly-tailed grub. Any color....as long as it's chartruse! There are plenty bass in this "trout section" of the river. Concentrate on the faster sections especially at the base of rapids for some of the active river bass. Worms and shaky-heads or small cranks will also catch fish in the deeper/slower areas. It will be Memorial Day weekend so you will not be alone. Tubers and beer drinkers mostly.

If it fishes anything like the Devils in Del Rio or the Buffalo in Arkansas, small green pumpkin tubes/craw imitators with the jig head rigged inside the tube and YM top water will get the job done. I fish before and after swift water casting to rocks or overhanging trees. I am guessing an inline spinner like a panther martin would also do the trick. I love fishing a small river in a kayak!!

See you on the lake and have a great day!

I appreciate the response! Yes sir, it looks like the house is pretty close to the dam (across the river from the Hidden Valley Sports parks), and has a very large dock on the water. It will probably be crazy busy, but I hope we can get some quiet time fishing early.

Would you recommend any top water baits at first light? Or just go straight to spinners/jigs/cranks/plastics?

I love top water so I fish it until they won't eat it. If there is ripple on the water from current, I think they feel comfortable eating the top water. I usually catch bigger river fish on top than on the tube.

See you on the lake and have a great day!

Good news is the really heavy river traffic does not begin until the horseshoe(not horseshoe falls) where FM 306 crosses the river twice. The best topwater I have used on Texas rivers including the Guad is a clear Tiny Torpedo(little top water plug w/prop). Yellow Magic like mentioned above ought to work great also.

That is great news; looks like we'll be a ways off from there. It's just off FM 306, up around Edgegrove Rd. and past Ridgewood Bend.

I'll get a few of the top water lures you both suggested and try them out. Thx!

Good options mentioned already. Never fished the Guad but on some other very clear rivers ive had some luck with the little live target frogs and a little 1/8 oz stanley spinnerbait. But the absolute number one go to for me in that situation is 6-8lb test leader, split shot, and 1/0 to 2/0 hook with either a tiny brush hog or a finesse/centipede worm.

I'm hearing that the Guadalupe is closed through the weekend for tubing (but open to kayaks) to allow the corp to release water. Does anyone in the local area know if it's worth attempting to kayak fish the area? Is the debris in the water from the heavy rains that bad?

Appreciate any input.

Current is very strong right now on the Guadalupe. Water is being let out of Canyon Lake with more heavy rain in the forecast for Wednesday,Thursday, and Friday. I have fished that river a lot over the years and I would make other plans for the weekend. Just my two cents. 2cents

Thanks for the input. TubeHaus just updated their website, it says the COE will reduce river levels for Memorial Day weekend down to 400 cfs and tubing will be allowed. If the weather sticks though...that may change.

I wish we could make other plans, we rented a house on the river a while back. We may just be fishing off the bank.
