A friend has given me a never been used Pflueger Supreme IM-8 fly rod. The rod is 9' long and 6wt. I purchased a Cabelas "Wind River" 5-6 wt. reel (322085) for $20 and Three Forks™ Fly Line kit that comes with backing, floating line, & tippet (322685).
10 years ago I took a Fly casting course at Bass Pro so now I'm looking to try my hand.
Ok now the question's.
1) can anyone tell me about this rod and it's quality?
2) any where around central Texas I can kind of get a refresher on casting?
3) any reason not to fly fish from the deck of a bass boat?

Welcome!

There is a Waco Fly Fishing Club. They ought to be able to get you brushed up.

Bass boat fishing is fine stuff. Get right up on the places you want to hit. Just be aware that line management takes on a who new set of challenges, what with cleats, trolling motors, and all the other bits of a boat that will snag line. Nothing that can't be managed, just be aware is all. A basket for the line might work for you.

Lighted docks! If there are bodies of water thereabouts with lighted docks, that is some great sand bass night fishing.

Enjoy!

Nothing wrong with wrong with fly fishing from a bass boat. However, in addition to the hazards Robin mentioned, you have to watch out for the dog sitting on your line...

Bass boats work great for fly fishing. (With or without the dog.) laugh
