Has anyone ever takin an original Yamaha battery cable and spliced a new connection on the battery side? My ground has a break in it about 6 inches in the wire, behind the terminal. Any thoughts.

As long as you use a connector that you can solder on you should be fine.

Thick cable is next to impossible to solder on without burning up the insulation and soldering is not necessary nor acceptable as the only means of a mechanical connection as per ABYC.. Replace the whole battery cable, with marine grade battery cable, tinned lugs properly crimped and the ends covered with adhesive lined heat shrink. Anything less is only a temporary patch and not a repair that will hold up. Doing it right doesn't cost that much.

Been there, done that. Ended up replacing cable for the final fix.

Replace the cable if the break shows corrosion at all. Cables can corrode under the protective sheath and once it starts its a never ending battle.

Right is Right and Wrong is Wrong! The last thing you want is a bad connection it'll cost you a Starter , or an Alternator trying to get proper Current , to Run , Charge, and Start the Boat. And a spark from a bad connection can cause an Explosion in or around Battery boxes and fuel storage areas. I've seen a complete console blown off a boat in Kemah Tx because of a Spark , Bob Landry was a witness to that too! Scary Stuff.
