Maxxum 70 lb thrust. Worked few for several months. Started popping breaker at Tawakoni last weekend. Removed prop for line checks. Some moss was there that I removed that got behind the propeller. It will work on speed 3, but nothing on 1 and 2. 4 runs slow and 5 pops it. There is a black and white wire that goes to the switch connected to the speed knob that gets really hot to the touch and is starting to melt the wire coating. Is it like that switch went bad, or is this a bushings/bearings issue? Please post anyone who is Minn Kota that can check it quickly and give me price options for repair. Thanks in advance for all replies.

Sounds like the selector switch is bad

Mine did the same thing. Lost speeds 3 and 4. 1 and 2 were useless. 5 was too much. Bought a switch and a new yoke (beaching rope incedent last weekend). All parts and shipping was $23. Took about 15 minutes to fix.

You can call MinnKota and they can lead you to the parts that might fix it. Buy them direct. It Possibly can save you a ton of money.

Check with John at Jones Trolling Motor. He will help you diagnose it and can provide the required parts at a very competitive price. Great guy to work with and can explain the repair procedure in a easy to understand manner.

+1 for Jones Trolling Motors. The lady that answered the phone found my part from just a description. Fast shipping and a good price.

Look under the footpedal, where the 5speed switch is and see if the flag terminals on the switch are shorting into the black wire, or across any of the wires when the footpedal is rotated/pressed.

Lake Fork Electronics replaces a defective rotary switch for a Maxxum 70 two weeks ago. Sounds like a switch problem.

Will either be the rotary switch or maybe even the speed coil inside the potted nose cone. But 9/10 will be the rotary switch. I live in FW and can meet you somewhere nearby to drop it off to you.
