Hit one of my favorite sunfish ponds after work. I knew the water would be off color due to recent rains. When this pond is clear, it is crystal clear, and the sunnies bite like crazy this time of yr. Had my doubts today, since we have had rain on and off for over a week now. No reason to doubt! Off color water, switch the jig to black and chartreuse, and the bite is on. Caught about 40-50 sunnies, longear and greenies exclusively. Some of the greens in the 9 inch range, some of the longears as big as 7-8 inchers! Was not gonna keep any but took home 6 to give to a friend that loves fried sunfish! Good choice. Had a friendly fish eating bird, that kept trying to steal my fish! I would catch and unhook, and he would try to sneak up on me and snatch a meal! He was not at all afraid of a human. I caught a small longear, tossed it on the bank and he snatched it and flew a few feet away to enjoy it! Rudy

Nice fish as always Rudy! Good job. Side Note: I usually do not do as well fishing when water conditions are muddy. I usually do well with stained conditions and super good when water is clear. Right now all of my spots are muddy. Will have to travel some to fish clear water. Looks like conditions locally will stay on the muddy side for awhile. We have rain in the forecast for the next five days! I have already gotten a little over 5" of rain since the past Saturday. Forecast is saying another 1.5" during the early morning and throughout the whole day Thursday.

Off color ponds do a lot better in my experience than off colored rivers, creeks and streams. In off colored ponds the visibility under the mudline is much better, if that makes any sense. With the moving water, you have to find backwaters, sloughs and what not.

Great fish Rudy Do you have a picture of the big longear? As far as ponds go, I have many that I fish. I have found that a couple of the spring feed ponds will actually clear up more after a rain. I definitely tend to fish ponds after a rain vs. the creeks. If I do fish the creeks I will usually go up toward the headwaters. I've also been fishing with black / chartreuse the last few weeks and caught several trophy sized greenies. For some reason the longear in the ponds I fish haven't started biting yet. I caught several over 8 inches in one of the ponds last year but I haven't caught a single long ear in that pond this year.

Sadly I didn't get a pic of the big congrats! But all the ones I have caught this year out of that particular pond have been hefty.

Those are some fatties. I usually go to a bigger, darker bait when fishing muddy water.

Hey Gitter, I don't go to bigger because the pond is fairly shallow,(tried it, not good results) has a healthy abundance of hydrilla, duckweed, millfoil, and green algae. That being said, it has plenty of open water as well, and trying bigger gets down into the jungle too quickly, and as slow as i like to fish that jig to drive those bream crazy, the smaller works better for the technique, and well, you see the proof.
Once in awhile, though not as often as i'd like, lol- there is a method to my madness.
Thanks though,
Rudy

They have continued to bite in this off color water this constant/intermittent rain keeps producing. Just wish it would clear a bit, and i'd fill my bucket with big greens and longears. I have caught some very large longears in this off color water, can't imagine what a gangbusters bite i'd have if just cleared up a bit.
